I put my phone down when I got home from work and didn't pick up until just now. I was surprised to see I had a billion, give or take, notifications.
Well, Lin-Manuel Miranda, composer of Broadway musicals In the Heights and the smash hit Hamilton, has been teasing an August announcement for a while now. I was thrilled and over-joyed to see that his announcement was they was handling the music for Moana!
I just had to share my joy somewhere. I literally cannot say enough good things about Lin. He's a brilliant composer who is changing the face of musical theatre, while at the same time honoring it's tradition. And beyond that he's lovely and kind, and despite epic success - quite humble. He is just an all around A+ person.
And, if I couldn't love him more, he made a video of his announcement, which he did as a rap. You should definitely check it out - I'll post the link below. It's a beautiful statement with call outs to great Disney composers, leading with the Sherman Brothers, who I adore.
The most beautiful part, which moved me to tears, was when Lin, practically in tears, said he worshipped Alan Menken and now he gets to be part of his club. And he so does worship Alan Menken - Lin does a special pre-show show at Hamilton and on Menken's birthday they performed a bit from Newsies in honor him.
So ladies and gentlemen, please avail yourselves of the magic that is Lin-Manuel Miranda.
You all need to watch this: Link to Lin's Twitter announcement.
Video of the Menken pre-show performance. (Google #Ham4Ham for more fun stuff.)
And if you want to know more about Lin:
His first Broadway show, In the Heights, performing on the Tony Awards:
Performing an early song from his musical Hamilton for President Obama and the first lady.
And a ridiculously cute video of Lin and Jonathan Groff (Aka Kristoff from Frozen, who plays King George in Hamilton) referencing High School Musical.
