Hi all,
I'm having breakfast with my best friend in two weeks at Kona Cafe. I'm really wanting to try the tonga toast, but I don't like bananas. Does Tonga Toast taste just like bananas or do the bananas act more like a filling?

I'd love something similar.. i even saw the minnie mouse french toast that dips the french toast in cinnamon sugar. Any suggestions for the non-banana lover that I am?

Tonga Toast is very, very sweet and yes, it does taste like bananas. I'd suggest you try something else and perhaps one of your dining companions will let you taste of theirs.

very powerful banana taste..

I would get the pineapple macadamia nut pancakes. I'm a french toast fan (and have a big sweet tooth) at heart but these pancakes are out of this world.. my favorite there.

I had the Pooh's puffed french toast at Crystal Palace with breakfast, and it was great! Very sweet and no bananas there.

I'm dying to try Tonga toast and the macadamia pineapple pancakes!

The Samoan (pulled pork eggs benedict) is a nice option at Kona if you need to avoid the Tonga Toast. Best advice noted above is to convince someone in your party to order the TT and then mooch a bite or two. Yes, it is stuffed with bananas, so it's impossible to avoid the bananas altogether, but remember that it's also covered in cinnamon sugar, has the strawberry compote (think "melted strawberry smoothie"), as well as syrup, so those add-ons, along with the mass of bread that is involved, definitely balance out the banana.

Last August my husband ordered the Tonga toast while I had the macadamia pancakes as I don't like bananas either. At the end of the breakfast, while chatting with our server she told me that you can order the Tonga without the bananas and that many do it. It's now on my list of things to try!

It is stuffed with actual bananas, not really a filling, and they are close to the bottom of that big piece so you could probably just take them out and maybe not eat that bottom layer. That Strawberry sauce is really good!

I am so glad I looked this up! Thank you for posting this - have been wondering about ordering Tonga Toast without the bananas. I want to try it but I am very allergic to bananas (it is basically heartbreaking, as I love bananas but they make me VERY sick) :crazy2:

Ooh, this is good to know. I love bananas, but not warm ones. After trying the Tonga toast once, I switched to the macadamia pancakes, which are so yummy. I'm looking forward to trying the Tonga Toast sans bananas the next time.

I hate bananas and do like tonga toast (scraping out bananas). I do like banana bread, though, and feel the amount of banana after scraping is similar. If you don't do banana bread, don't do it. Also, the strawberry sauce is so good! This is not served with the tonga toast at CC only Kona.

I love that this thread has been helpful. I've not yet ordered the tonga toast but my friend does every time we go to Kona for breakfast. I make sure to get a good corner piece without bananas. I'm not a fan of the strawberry sauce (gasp) either, so it's a win-win in both of our books. I get the egg and cheese omlet with ham and its SOOOO good. She loves having some of my breakfast in exchange for a bit of TT.
