Tom Staggs Promoted to Chief Operating Officer

waiting for the other shoe to drop

Yup. And I'm also glad certain folks were "put out to pasture" before this announcement.

Rasulo seems to be on his way out. Staggs to be groomed as next CEO. Just wonder who will take Staggs parks job.

Staggs didn't impress me one bit. When the DREAM was christened/welcomed at the Port his speaking flub turned me off totally.

So someone at the Walt Disney Company isn't allowed to misspeak when they are doing alive event. It happens all the time even to The Queen of England. Although sometime when she misspeaks it can have interesting results like for example when she christened the QEII she was supposed to christen it the Queen Elizabeth but she added the word Second to it so and Cunard had to change the name of the ship because of it.

I don't see Staggs as a CEO. The Disney Company (ABC/ESPN/Movie Studios/Merchandise/Parks) is too big and too diverse for someone whose strengths seem to be in the Parks field. There is a reason why the Disney went outside the company when it hired Eisner, and why his successor came from Capital Cities/ABC. I just don't see a Parks and Resort guy as being the right fit for a company whose brand is created through entertainment. With the exception of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, what we see at the Parks and Resorts flows from what is produced in the studios. Not the other way around. Disney needs a strong "studios" leader. Not a strong "parks" leader. Just my opinion.

I would just LOVE to see John Lasseter as head of Parks. But it seems that lately the company is giving that job to the money people, not the creative people. Which doesn't make sense, since in the early days of the company, Walt was the creative guy and Roy was the money guy. Roy was very important to the company but we all know Walt was in charge.

I never thought of Lasseter before, that's a very interesting observation. It is very true about Walt and Roy's control of the company (companie(s) if you count original Imagineers). Let's hope that Disney doesn't forget the old saying about history repeating itself. With giving the position to thw $$$ people.

I don't think Lasseter wants the top job. I think there are stories somewhere of when Jobs originally bought Pixar John Lasseter was almost being run ragged doing things for both Pixar and Jobs. Right now he basically manages Pixar and Disney Animation.

I think the says of having someone like Walt at the helm of Disney are gone, it was a very different company then it is now. In someways it's actually better to look at it as being multiple sub companies and not everyone is suited to run all of them.

It's true that Lasseter is basically managing Pixar and Disney Animation, but let's not forget that he oversaw the relaunch of California Adventure and was hands on in the development of the Pixar portion of Art of Animation.
