Tom and NIcole were never married? What does this mean for Katie?

I've read this morning that Nicole Kidman didn't have to have her marriage to Tom Cruise annulled--the catholic church never recognized it because it was a scientology ceremony. The article was on E! online.
Don't you think this makes Katie Holmes' parents feel a little bit better about the whole thing? If it doesn't work out, she can always go back to her church and get married again later down the road.

The Catholic church does not recognize any marriage that isn't performed by a Catholic priest. If you are married by a justice of the peace, the Catholic church will not recognize it b/c it wasn't performed by a Catholic priest.

Or, so that is my understanding. I say this b/c my cousin wanted to baptize her baby in the Catholic church and the priest would not allow it b/c the parents weren't married in the Catholic church - they did a city hall wedding. They got married in the church and their marriage was then recognized.

I'm just going on one past experience ... I could be wrong ... if so, I stand corrected!

To me this is such a minor minor detail. I think Katie Holmes parents most likely are worried about much more.

JMO, but honestly, the fact that she can remarry again in the church's eyes would be at the bottom of my "worried" list if Katie were my daughter.

You are correct! :goodvibes

So Nicole is supposed to remarry Keith Urban. Is she still all in that Scientology business, or did she quit that wehn she divorced Tom?

You only need it annulled if you were married in the Catholic church.

Nicole was never into Scientology, she remained a Catholic.

I believe they were still legally married. I'm assumming that a Scientology wedding ceremony is valid in the US. It really doesn't matter what the Catholic church thinks in terms of Katie being protected from Tom.

Nicole already did marry Keith Urban, in the church, on Sunday.
Wheeler you make a good point. I'm in the Toledo area and we hear a lot about Tom and Katie--oops, I mean Kate! If Katie were my daughter I would be worried about a lot of things. But if they do get married, I could console myself A LITTLE by telling myself that she could come to her senses later and have a nice church wedding. Her parents are very religious.

As a Catholic, I actually do not feel that way at all. One of my family members was marrying someone we weren't sure if it would last or not. I heard a few older relatives say "at least if it doesn't last, they can have a church wedding" To me that makes absolutely no difference. If it doesn't last, there will be heart break. The ability to get married in a church down the road doesn't make a bit of difference if there is heartbreak.

So that little tid bit wouldn't help me at all if I were her parents. Truthfully in the scheme of things, that is so minor and so irrelavent to life. A church ceremony is lovely and I wouldn't have done it any other way myself, but it isn't always the end all, beat all for a Catholic. Especially when family members who could be hurt in the end are concerned.

Sounds like a priest thing not a Catholic church thing because my sil was married by a jp and her son was baptisized in the Catholic Church.

Hmm, that's strange - my friend just had 2 previous marriages annulled so she could be married in a Catholic Church - one had taken place in a Baptist Church and another in Las Vegas. She still had to go through the whole anullment process - statements, witnesses, etc... took about a year and they finally were approved about 6 weeks before her planned wedding.

She couldn't just say "We were married in xxx church" - had to have grounds for the annulments.

When I married my late husband, we were married by a jp also. He wasn't Catholic either. I didn't have any problems getting my dd baptized at the Catholic church I attended at the time.

I work for the Milwaukee Archdiocese and it doesn't matter where you get married. Our Archdiocese recognizes all marriages no matter where they take place. We had a couple that were married on a beach in Florida. The couple got divorced and the guy wanted to get remarried. He had to go thru the whole annulment thing. I just wonder if different archdiocese has different rules. Plus I don't believe the story was credible, that Priest should not be talking about anyone's circumstances. It is ethically wrong.

I'm not sure if this is true --= Priests refuse to marry protestants who have been divorced from a protestant marriage; don't they?

That's what I thought. If you're married, period, you need an annullment to be re-married in the Catholic Church. Our Church also insists that a couple have a Catholic wedding ceremony before their kids are baptised Catholic.

Maybe they had a ceremony but no marriage licence?

I betcha Nicole is glad she's Catholic! She now can really but Tom aside! That's the way Tom wanted it. He got rid of the marriage before 10 years, so Nicole could not sue him for 1/2! What a toad.

I suspect this is something her parents are clinging to.
