Agreed, but the Hertz information appears to be a bit out of date. (At least the amount of the "convenience fee" charge.

OP didn't realize rental agencies have different toll plans. Its not literally hidden BUT the details require clicking through a couple of menu options. Easy if you're looking for it. Not as evident if you didn't realize the programs exist

OP is still calling it a hidden fee even though s/he knows about it. I gave information so they didn't have to call Hertz.

Addressing the information they had access to before making their post here...it's also mentioned in the terms and conditions one should at least skim through before clicking through to rent a car. (started a booking to see if it's mentioned, and it is)

Some consider terms and conditions as fine print.

I wouldn't call it a hidden fee but I sort of understand a new renter may not have thought of toll programs

There is also Visitor Toll Pass which you can pick up through Terminal B at MCO; it works like a transponder in your car and you can avoid the rental agency's daily fee, but you need a smartphone to use the app. I also think EZpass is now accepted on the toll roads in the Orlando area, if you have EZpass at home. (and if you DO take your EZPass but opt not to use it, keep it in the shielded silver bag that it came in, to prevent it from being read when you go through the toll booths. If it's just in your suitcase, it's gonna be read and you'll be charged twice, once by the rental company's transponder/plate or cash if you are using it, and again by EZPass.)
All EZ-Pass compatible transponders will work everywhere in FL as of Memorial Day last year. I used my IL IPass in October. If you have an EZ-Pass compatible transponder in the vehicle and it is read, you will not be charged again by the rental company if they are using PlatePass, which most of them do. PlatePass is only used if you the system doesn't read a transponder.
If your renting from MCO, I highly recommend using the visitor toll pass. I haven’t used it since it returned after taking a break when Covid started, but I used it 4 times between August 2019 and February 2020 and it worked out great. You pay the transponder discounted toll rates and there’s no daily fee. I rented from Alamo each time I used it.
There are a couple noticeable issues with the VTP. You have to have a smartphone and the app, you can only pick up on one side of the airport and you have to rent from one of the 10 rental companies onsite at MCO. It worked quite well for me in January when I flew in on SW, but wouldn't have worked nearly as well in October when I came in on Delta.

Can you explain more details about this? We are renting from Budget for 1 week from MCO. Do I get the eToll unlimited for $60 (seems like a lot!) or do I just bring a roll of quarters? We don't plan on traveling too far from Disney property (to/from airport & maybe to Walmart for kitchen supplies),

I would go with visitor toll pass. There’s no cost to use it, you just pay for the tolls and it’s cheaper and easier than brining quarters.

Visitor Toll Pass works perfectly.
Also, if you have an EZ Pass transponder, they now work in Florida.

We usually bring our EZ pass with however I'm interested in the visitor pass never herd of it.
My only concern reading thru the website is this:

"When you leave the airport, check the app to confirm the pass is working properly. It may take up to 90 minutes to confirm the license plate is paired successfully. If there is an issue, you will see a notification on the app notification center"

Has this happened to anyone that used this? Your hitting toll roads as soon as you leave the airport(assuming your taking any highway).

Good point. We don't have an EZ pass. I would be interested to know this as well.

This goes back to 2014, before EZpass was accepted, we bought a Sunpass since we were in Florida frequently. (We lived in MD so also had an EZpass). It served us well over the years, and even now that we are Florida residents I still have the original. If you aren't in an EZpass state and travel in Florida a lot I'd recommend an Sunpass PRO. It also works in the EZpass states. I got rid of my EZpass when the Sunpass PRO came out as I had to pay a yearly maintenance fee for the EZpass.
Just a suggestion for the Sunpass PRO.
