I have heard that, due to the pandemic, toll booths are no longer manned by people. A picture of your license plate is taken and you get a bill mailed to you.

Does this sound correct? We will be renting a car with Alamo (via Costco) at Orlando International, and driving to Tampa. I guess we can leave the $1 bills and quarters at home!

Thanks in advance!

Read this thread! I used in January. Picked up pass at airport. Easiest thing ever thanks to all the information people post. Much easier than cash or worrying about rental car charging fees.
So true! Living here, I don't understand why other people that live here won't get a SunPass and choose to get charged extra with toll-by-plate (some counties had phased out or are phasing out cash toll and these are your two options, but I don't believe the Disney area is one of them yet). Great idea!! The app is super easy to use and helpful when registering rental cars and to add funds or set it to automatic replenish.

Yeah, I think Disney won't have it I remember reading something here that they pay more to maintain their own roads or something. I just hope it last through all of this can you imagine if Disney did a toll road? would be a moneymaker for sure.

Have a look at the Visitor Toll Pass scheme (I’d post the URL but I believe that’s frowned on round these parts?). It worked brilliantly for us in November 2019. It’s currently suspended due to coronavirus, but depending on when you’re travelling it might be worth checking their website. You can sign up in advance or at the airport...

Am I able to purchase a Sunpass at MCO (Orlando International Airport)? Thanks again!

If you have sufficient time, you may want to consider an online order for the Central Florida Expressway’s new universal transponder instead (formerly EPass Xtra): https://www.cfxway.com/uni/. This will work throughout Florida and in the 17 other states in the EZ-Pass compact.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Visitor Toll Pass pilot program is temporarily suspended until further notice for all visitors traveling through Orlando International Airport due to the events surrounding the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. https://visitortollpass.com/

With ALAMO you will be automatically enrolling in their toll program first time you zip thru an electronic toll ..... see: https://www.sunpass.com/en/tolls/rentalVehicles.shtml

Yes, currently suspended as I said in my post above. Hopefully it will return as traffic through the airport increases, because especially for overseas visitors it’s a wonderfully efficient scheme. And don’t worry about Alamo - if you have a VTP tag in your window the toll is billed to the VTP program rather than the owner of the vehicle, and VTP then bill it to you against the card you register with them. At discounted rates toll rates and no service charge. What’s not to like?

that cleared every thing up didn't it? :rotfl2:let me try this way ....

toll by plate works for YOUR car .... it sends a bill to the car owner ....

for a RENTAL it is different as the rental company does not want to deal with your tolls .... so they turned this over to a THIRD company. See https://www.sunpass.com/en/tolls/rentalVehicles.shtml

It was announced yesterday (7/6/2020), that FTE (Florida's Turnpike Enterprise) which operates SunPass will join the E-ZPass Group. This would bring E-ZPass compatibility to the remaining toll roads in FL.

Nicola Liquori, CEO of Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise: “Interoperability with E-ZPass has been a longstanding goal, and now it is a reality. By the end of the year, millions of E-ZPass customers will enjoy the benefits of the SunPass system on 764 miles of roadway from the Panhandle to the Keys. This effort aligns with our goals to improve mobility by promoting electronic tolling and, more importantly, to enhance customer service by increasing payment options.”

The State Road and Tollway Authority of Georgia (SRTA) is also joining the E-ZPass network.
