Now I know what your are thinking, why would someone with a shellfish allergy go to a Japanese restaurant? Well I am someone who has always loved Japanese food and after being to many different sushi restaurants throughout the northeast, all who have been very understanding of my allergy so far, with no shrimps sneaking into my rolls, I though, why not try sushi at Tokyo Dining at Disney? After all, its a sushi restaurant actually staffed by Japanese people (believe it or not most sushi restaurants in the states are run by Koreans, go figure).

So on my most recent trip to Disney earlier this year I booked an ADR for Tokyo Dining during Illuminations. I had notified them in advance of my food allergy online and when I called to confirm I notified them a second time. When we were seated the waitress informed us that the manager would come to the table to go over what I could eat on the menu. Disney goes above and beyond when it comes to food allergies normally, so I was expecting this and was grateful for it. When the manager came over, he scanned through the menu with me and then said there were only few items I could safely eat, teriyaki and some fried items. Now I had scanned the menu online when I made the ADR and I knew there were a lot more things than that on the menu I could eat, minus one tempera shrimp here or one shrimp roll there. But the manager said he could not leave anything off the plate. I thought this very odd, but went ahead and ordered the chicken since he came off as rude and I didn't want further argument. My partner also tries to avoid shrimp because of cross contamination and so eventually talked the manager into letting her have a plate of sushi, leaving off the shrimp without substitution, which consisted of half of the plate. However, when the food came out, there were the little shrimp tails poking out of her sushi and by the time the waitress came back the kitchen was closed. So I left that night without fulfilling my original goal of trying sushi made by Japanese chefs, but at least I avoided my allergy thanks to a very unpleasant manager.

I'm sorry you had such a disappointing experience.

Thank you for sharing this. I have a shellfish allergy but my husband enjoys it and would like to be able to go to dinner once in a while. So we try to find restaurants where we can both happily and safely get a good dinner. This will be on my DO NOT ENTER list.
