Tofu. Any suggestions?

Sheesh, people! If some of you guys don't like tofu, then don't eat it, but don't tell other people not to try it out. It's a great protein and I've enjoyed it in restaurants as well as at home. The OP didn't ask if you thought it was gross.

To the OP, I haven't noticed much difference among brands, but you want to make sure that you're using the right firmness for your recipes. The really soft tofu is great in smoothies but not in stirfry, for example.

The Vegetarian Times has a recipe search. Just type in tofu and you'll get TONS of great ideas. Tofu is even good as an egg replacement in desserts, and I've had "tofu scramble", which is basically tofu instead of scrambled eggs (very good).

I think the people who said don't eat it were mostly trying to be funny, tongue in cheek, kinda thing. I say that because I was about to say yes I have a suggestion...don't eat it. I would have put a little smilie after it that hopefully let everyone know I wasn't serious. However now I see how well that would have gone over. ;)

Tofu for some, meat for others. Whatever floats your boat!

Honestly, it isn't funny to me. But lots of meat-eaters make fun of vegetarians and healthy eaters on these boards and in real life. Like we all should just eat bacon and shut up. It really gets old, believe me.

I guess if you don't like tofu, why open a thread about it asking for help? The OP can decide whether or not he/she likes it. I'm not going to open a thread asking what to do with chicken breasts and post "get tofu instead".

Just because someone eats meat- doesn't mean they aren't a healthy eater. Moderation in all things.

To the OP- frankly I have never had it, but the general consensus seems to be it takes on whatever flavor you put it with. Let us know how you like it!

Oh come on now, nobody was making fun of healthy eaters! I have never had tofu and that prompted my question. It sure doesn't seem like the OP had an issue with tofu haters. Or is that too strong a word?

Actually since this thread was started I did some research. I am a well rounded eater and consider myself to be a healthy eater. I dont eat tofu and cannot recall but I am pretty sure I have never even tried it. I was looking up recipes that would appeal to me that contained tofu and to my surprise I cant eat it! At least I shouldn't. Is anyone else aware that foods that contain soy (tofu) should not be consumed by individuals that have certain thyroid diseases? So I learned something new and I now have a legitimate excuse to not have to try/eat it!

BOth me and DD are lactose intolerent so I use alot of tofu to get calcium. Tofu takes on flavor from other food, I crumple firm tofu and mix it with meat in spaghetti sauce, I use it in place of ricotta cheese for lagasna. I stir fry silken tofu with chicken and teriyaki sauce. I blend silken tofu into cream like consistency and use it to thicken sauce, soup and chowder. Tofu is a staple in our household.:thumbsup2

I usually buy Nasoya brand tofu, usually we do a stir fry with sauce and mushrooms.
