Every Monday I deliver meals for Meals on Wheels. DD goes with me when she is not in home school class.

Today we had one of our regular clients who looked just really tired and old. It breaks my heart when a client goes off the list because they have moved on to the next adventure.

It is also the most rewarding part of my week and reminds me what is truly important in life. Many times MOW volunteers are the only human contact our clients see and for me it takes just two hours out of my week. It is so important to us that it is the number one tenet of our yearly business plan.

DD loves it too and my clients absolutely adore her.

I used to work for an independent living home for the elderly that solicited just those types. The place was built for those elderly that had no social connections and gave them a truly fun alternative. I saw the loneliest of people become social butterflies.

I don't want to die before I get old, I saw people in their 90s having a BALL. One of them ran the Olympic torch at age 91! We offered meals but MOW also delivered there.

So nice to hear that you and your DD do this for the elderly..

Many states also have programs now where they recruit volunteers (or in some cases, they are paid) to go into the homes of housebound elderly folks and simply provide them with "companionship": chat; play cards; work on jigsaw puzzles; etc..

There are shut-ins here in the neighborhood that my entire family interacts with as often as possible and just the littlest thing leaves them tickled pink..

It makes me sad that so many elderly people have no "human contact" - for whatever reason.. A few minutes here and there really makes their day - whether it's delivering meals or just dropping by to chat, bring in their mail, take their garbage out for them, or whatever..

You're teaching your DD a very valuable lesson in life..
