When I was a teen, I'm almost 41, I wanted things that other kids had. I remember wanting a pair of Nike shoes and a Ralph Lauren Polo shirt. My parents couldn't afford anything like that, so I had to accept that reality.

This is nothing new though. :confused3 Kids will always want things that their peers have. It's up to the parents to make those decisions. The OP has decided that her child will not have them, I respect that. I find it a bit irrational to be upset with those parents that choose to give their child those items. :confused3

Well, yes, it is judgemental. But, everyone judges at some point in their lives, and this is a hot button with me. So, take it or leave it. I stand firm on what I think of these issues. Now, with the weather we are having, my connection is as slow as molasses, I have taxes to do, and a son that I'm actually going to play a board game with! Remember those...Board games??

My question for you is why don't you want your son to fit in with the rest of the kids????????????

Oh and as for the board games, we have plenty and play them plenty thank you, but my kids can balance their time between those and the computer games but the don't do much of either because they are OUTSIDE playing. Why aren't you outside with your child, that is MUCH better then playing a board game.

That's funny...my DH and I often talk about parents like you too. We just scratch our heads and wonder why they think their opinion should apply to everyone.

We have tons of time to talk about it too...you know, after we send all of the kids to their rooms to check out porn on the internet and watch TV shows that are inappropriate for their ages. They can just pick up their cell phones and call us if they need anything.... :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Your kids do that too?? We usually bookmark those sites and write down the times of those tv shows for them......makes it easier for them and keeps them out of our hair longer!!

Well, this went ugly while I was posting. I'm taking mine out because it no longer makes sense with how the post went.

I am lazy...thanks for pointing that out to me....I will stay indoors all week after this...oh wait I CAN'T MY LAZY BUTT HAS TO BE PLAYING SPORTS WITH THE KIDS AGAIN ALL WEEK.

some of us are busy talking on our cell phones with our kids in juvie, while surfing the net looking at porn :confused3 you need to spell it out. :confused3

Mom2boys here: the boys are 10.5 & 12 (5th grade & 6th grade)
1- Never had/never will have a TV in their rooms. Have been over this 100x with younger DS. He thought he'd buy his own tv. Told him he still wouldn't have it in his room.
2- The family computer is in the family room. The only other computer in the house is mine - for my business. Do NOT touch it without prior permission.
3 - Cell phone - ok they have them. I didn't get them the "kid" ones because we got such a deal. DH & I switched services. We paid for one phone & recieved 4. It costs $20 more per month for both boys to have a phone #. It was for MY piece of mind - not their personal pleasure/social life.

And just to annoy them ;) they aren't allowed to watch tv or play video/computer games Mon-Thurs.

I have told my kids time & again that they are the poor kids in town. They will NOT be recieving sports cars for their 16th birthdays. They don't own iPods or MP3 players -older DS had a free promotional MP3, it broke after a year. He hasn't asked for a replacement. My kids have way more than they need - just not everything they think they want.

At least we know you're eating a healthy breakfast, because obviously someone peed in your cheerios this morning. Maybe you should get off the computer and go back to being mommy of the year while the rest of us ignore our children. :thumbsup2

So am I lazy when I coach his little league baseball team for 3 months, and football for 2 months?

How lazy m I when we are at the amuement park with season passes all summer?

How lazy am I when he is honor roll and I help him when he needs help on homework.

How lazy am I when I work and am ABLE to provide him these "extra's"?

I guess I would rather be labled lazy than have to force my beliefs onto others.
Thank you

This is why I love the DIS! Let's not go there! :teeth:
Have a great day, Wishing!

Wow, judge much?

With my kids ages obviously we don't have this issue yet but I have considered putting in a TV and a DVD player in my DS's room (who is almost 4) some days. We allow him to watch videos some in the evenings and some nights it would be nice for us to set up the 3,000th viewing of the Lion King in his room so we don't have to watch it again as well. I decided that I really didn't want to start that so soon so instead on those nights he just gets told that he can't watch TV at all. Call me a bad Mom or a mean Mom...I can take it.

Both of my kids have toy cell phones! Gasp! I am sure that would be a BAD decision on your part because why would young kids even need to pretend they had something as unnecessary as a cell phone!

I guess I should get ready for my trip....where is that hand basket when you need it? :teeth:

So, with all of the busy things in your day, you just decided to come on the DIS and blame a bunch of people your kid has never met for all of his problems? I just don't get the concept here...

Dang, I have been up for 23 hours now and REALLY, REALLY need to get to sleep, but this thread is too darn entertaining!!! :surfweb:

Wow. DH and I have similar views as you on the whole electronic-stuff-in-the-kids-room-thing, but that's where the similarity ends. DD's 10 and 12 may use our bedroom tv if we're watching something downstairs, and they use the family computer in the office. No cell phones yet, but most likely they will have them in H.S.

BUT, please don't judge others just because they don't share your views. Your DS will most definitely live without the things "everyone" else has and it's your job to do what you feel is right for your family....just like it's "everyone" else's parents job to do what is right for their own kids. I certainly don't think it's the fault of other parents when DD's whine for the latest contraption...it's life and the last time I checked, life is just not fair so we all have to deal with it!

I really hope that your post is tongue and cheek like others have said. Just remember kids will say most anything to get what they want. We were all teenagers once. Also, it's highly possible that some kids earned their cell phone, tv or computer. As a teenager I used to babysit often, and I worked as a mother's helper during the summer to earn money for the things I wanted. Please don't "assume" that their parents just handed it to them. You know what happens when we "assume" don't you? :sunny:
