To the Fantasy & Beyond: Private Mixology; Beer Exchange; July 20, 2013

After drying off, we went to get the kids at the Club. They were quite happy to go swimming, AquaDucking, movie-watching & pizza eating. Side note: my kids were never unhappy leaving the club and this is different than the Dream. We had to pull them out of there kicking and screaming. This time, they did not seem to participate in many of the activities - rather they were watching movies & playing on the computer. They didn't NOT want to go to the Club - they just didn't necessarily want to stay there.

We had the same experience with our kids in the kids club this cruise. On all previous cruises we had to drag our daughter out. This time she was excited to go in the first time, but got bored after a short time. She went back a couple of times with the same experience. We also saw much less activity when picking her up. She would always be printing on the computer with her friends when we arrived.

I do not know if this is specific to the Fantasy, or if something was changed over the entire cruiseline. :confused3

I mentioned it to the ladies who braided my daughter's hair & they said they see less kids on seven day trips.

I thought long and hard about formal night. I looked at lots of dresses online and in stores. I made my husband buy a new suit & rented suits for our two boys. My daughter was gifted a beautiful purple fancy dress for Christmas in anticipation of our cruise.

I found the site Rent the Runway and loved their Our Runway part of their website. You enter your measurements & it shows you real people wearing their rented dresses. So you can see women with big busts or hips wearing these fabulous designer dresses. I really was thinking this might be what I was looking for.

They also have accessories (earrings, necklaces, etc. . . .). So I was looking around the accessories and found this:

Hello Beautiful.

That was it - I was going to have that purse on the cruise. To rent would be $81 for eight days. But I wanted to see if possibly I could own that beautiful thing. It is from three years ago, so there did not seem to be any available retail. There were several on ebay around $250. I decided to go ahead and rent and wear it with a black pantsuit.

There is no doubt I was more excited about that purse than anything on the cruise. When it arrived at my house the day before the cruise, I squealed!

So I was very excited to debut it at our all girl brunch at Palo.

I loved that purse. I got the most reaction out of Cast Members who LOVED it!

And hey - if you follow that Rent the Runway link & end up renting something, I get a credit.

Love the beer exchange idea! I might need to see if anyone on our cruise is interested. And LOVE Boulevard! We are currently in Topeka (originally Wichita). DH is thinking Free State if we do a beer exchange.

There was a Free State brew at the Beer Exchange!

Headed to Palo Brunch via the hallways rather than out on the pool deck (have to maintain that hair people). My MIL was waiting for me and we went to the lounge to wait for my SIL. I wore a very cute top with very cute shorts (woops!). They were "fancy" shorts but as was told by the hostess that they were not allowed and I needed to change.

Honestly can't believe I made that mistake - I LIVE on these boards before a cruise - I make notes and spreadsheets with everything about the cruise. And I forgot no shorts in Palo. Quick change and back to the restaurant where we were escorted to our table.

My husband & I dined at Palo on the Dream and really loved it. Was really nice to have a meal with just the two of us. But this was my first experience with the Brunch.

Our waiter (from Russia I believe) was very nice but took way too long explanining things. My fault b/c we had to rush through b/c my outfit change caused us to start 20 minutes late. I explained that we only had about an hour for brunch. He just didn't pick up on the cues.

There is a buffet part of the restaurant with desserts, veggies, anti-pasta, fruit and seafood. They were for the most part, in small portions. You were also shown the entrees and the pizzas which could be ordered after you returned from the buffet part. We ordered the grape pizza which I had read about and a meat heavy pizza.

I loaded my plate with desserts because they looked fantastic!

He graciously packed the desserts to go b/c my SIL & I both had to bolt for the Beer Exchange. I

I was underwhelmed by the Palo brunch but it was completely my fault. I had packed in too much for that day & the brunch took the brunt of that. If I had to do it over, I would make sure there was nothing scheduled after and we could just relax and enjoy the food.

Headed back to our room to get ready for formal night. My dress had been returned from pressing. (I had stuck it in the dry cleaning bag around 4 p.m. on Sat). Cost was $4 and well worth it - dress looked great.

My husband went to work on the boys. We rented their suit from Men's Warehouse for $55 and I am so glad we did. We had bought a suit for my oldest for First Communion and he grew out of that like a day later. Renting made sense to me although my husband balked a bit at first. We were actually at the Men's Warehouse to possibly rent him a suit when we found a suit we both liked & bought it. TIP: The suit was marked at $300 which seemed shocking and I told the clerk so. He offered it to us for $150. Not sure if this is standard procedure but apparently you can haggle at Men's Warehouse.

I dressed my daughter and worked on her hair (wish I had brought the hot rollers). I then slipped on my dress and shoes and we were ready to go.

We had arranged for the whole family to meet by the staircase for photos at 5:00 p.m. - the listed time for photos to begin. My daughter & I went down around 4:30 in case a line developed (it didn't). Ordered drinks (the very yummy Captain's Mai Tai) at the Bon Voyage lounge and commenced people watching.

It does appear they start taking people for photos at 4:45. There are three set-ups. The grand staircase:

There are some other opportunities (Goofy, Micky & Minnie dressed up, etc. . ) but we stuck to these three & I was so happy with the results. I really wanted a nice picture of the larger family & one of my family. And I got what I wanted. We stayed in the lobby for around 20 minutes before making our way to The Royal Court for dinner.

Following along, I have boys near the same age (8&11) so curious to read more about the clubs and their experience. Also, lived in KCK for a LONG while after college and developed a love for the Chiefs! Not many of us outside KS/MO and I ended up with a Bronco loving husband - ugh!! Love Blvd Wheat!

Ugh - a Broncos/Chiefs marriage: I couldn't do it! Thanks for following along. Hope it helps plan your trip.

My husband laughed when every night I would go back to the cabin and take notes no what happened. Some other trip reporter said that she takes notes and that inspired me to do the same. I totally now know why - I am starting to forget things about the trip. Honestly thought this trip report would be knocked out within two weeks of our return. LOL.

Some side notes:

Here is a pic of a small card that all the adults that traveled with us received. It had everyone's room number on one side and then a daily schedule on the other. I did most of the planning of excursions, etc. . . so this gave everyone an idea of what was happening.

My husband begged me to not overplan our vacation, so this certainly gave that impression to him. Although I had numerous things planned otherwise.

I also made a spreadsheet for the week which allowed me to remember things that I forgot on the previous cruise: breakfast at a MDR; room service; things to do when I got onboard: BBB appts for girls; etc. . . . So you can see part of that mania.

So after the pics, we loitered a bit in the bar area and then made our way to Royal Court at 5:45. We always arrived at our MDR at 5:45 on the nose. But I noticed that other people were there. I think they must open it early & you can get in at 5:30. I think we should have tried going earlier in an effort to speed up our service a bit. We don't have any toddlers but we certainly have the age of kids that an hour & half dinner doesn't work for us.

The Royal Court dinner was fine. I had the French Onion Soup and Lobster Ravoli. Both were very yummy. Initially we had the server bring the kids food when they brought our apps but later in the week, we requested the kids meal be served at the same time as ours & it worked out much better. They happily colored while we had apps & salads and then we all ate together for the main course. Also the size of our party (16) certainly increased our time in the MDRs.

So far, I was totally unimpressed with the bread. Nothing really outstanding. I had some kind of beef/lamb that night. All red meat, I ordered rare. And the waitress was like "are you sure you want it rare"? And I said I would like for it still to be mooing when served. If you want your meat even medium rare, I would order it rare. The nature of serving that many people means that it will be overcooked.

After dinner, the kids are off to the club while we go for a dip at the adult pool. Again - completely empty except for us.

We pull the kids out of the club to go the first of three family karokes. I love to sing - it's just everyone else around me that might find it painful. :rolleyes1

The first karoke is the best time to go because people are still doing other things & you will be able to get at least one song in, maybe two.

I think I sang something from Lion King but I really can't remember and it's not in my notes. It was so fun. The whole family was present and we had such a great time. My neices sang accapella "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" by Taylor Swift & it was amazing! And my other neice sang "Tuppence" from Mary Poppins & everyone was blown away. I guess that side of the family got the musical talent.

Headed up to the pool deck after Karoke for some pool time and Aquaduck time. The movie was "Meet the Titans" which seemed a bit heavy but has some great themes.

So after that completely crazy jam-packed day, we went & crashed.

On our Dream cruise we had a family stateroom for five and that felt pretty crowded. This time it was adjoining staterooms with a veranda. And wow - these rooms feel small.

No luggage yet but we had the following on our desk/dresser:

  • Rainforest Passes for two days (pre-ordered)
  • Reservation confirmations for sports simulator (two days)
  • Port Adventure tickets for Mayan Ruins/Beach Tour in Cozumel
  • Silver Castaway Club Gift (back packs, snacks and key chains)

I was highly unorganized for our first cruise so I really wanted to stay on top of it for this one. We put all necessary paperwork in Steve's backpack and trashed the rest.

I had a list of things I wanted to accomplish that afternoon which included:

  • Confirming ressie for Palo as I had to have two different times since there were six of us going.
  • Sign up for exercise classes (they all seemed full last time)
  • Sign up for Art of the Ship tour
  • Enter the spa raffle
  • Make hair appointment for formal night
  • Talk to Stateroom Host about extra copy of Navigator

Steve took off with the kids to get kids club bands and explore the ship while I worked on my to-do list.

We met Marissa our stateroom host who was very sweet and accommodating. Our room was located next to the "towel" room so there were always people around our front door. No problem - you couldn't hear them or anything. Then my SIL & I set off for the gym.

We entered the raffle and spoke to the trainer about the boot camp class and spinning class. They open up the list for the spinning class at 5 pm the night prior to class. For the bootcamp, you sign up for a class or for the week. We both signed up for the week.

Off to the reservation desk for hair appointments. The formal day hair appointments go quick. We were able to book three appointments for late morning.

A quick drink of the day - this time fruity & yummy - at the adult pool capped off our afternoon before we headed for our Cruise Meet.

Can you explain about the Sport Simulator: You had a 2 day pass????? I thought you bought by the half hour? Thanks for your trip report- I love learning something new everytime I read a new one.

I think it is by the hour. We pre-booked two hours and those tickets were waiting for us in the stateroom. I just meant to imply that the simulator was booked for two days.

Glad you are enjoying the review & the sports simulator review is up next!

Can't wait to hear about the Sports Simulator review. Thinking about giving that as a gift to our neighbor for his birthday- they are going with us- our sons are bast friends.

The sports simulator was great. We did not do the golf simulator, but the multi sports one was a lot of fun. I definitely recommend it.

Thanks for mentioning the laundry service. Wondering how we would look presentable with our formal wear smooshed in a suitcase.
