I agreed to have a candle party at my house tomorrow night. I agreed to this before I knew I was going to be starting a full time job today. My plan was to serve a nice variety of party foods and just enjoy having friends over because lets face it NO one really likes "selling/buying" party's.
Well I am now tired, broke and not in the mood to clean let alone plan or go buy food.
Is it completely rude to not serve food at this thing??

I don't if it would be rude or not, but you should only do what you can afford to do. If you can't afford to do much, but want to do something get a bag of pretzels, a bag of chips, a couple bottles of soda and a container of sour cream and a packet of onion soup and make up a dip.

I also think if you're really not in the mood call up the person today and cancel because you are not feeling well.

I think you need to serve something.

You can go cheap though.....I had a friend that made kettle korn once to serve at a party like that and it was sooooo good.

That is why I never have those parties....I seem to spend more feeding everyone than I would make if I were to sell a bunch!

If you want my honest opinion....if it's starting anywhere between 4-7, then yes, I think you should serve SOMETHING, because that's the general dinner hour and likely people will be coming right after work.

Now, with that said, you don't need to get fancy or go all out, especially if you can't afford to. One thing I do that's quick, cheap and easy is grab a loaf of bread, some cans of tuna, make tuna salad sandwiches. Or if you've got eggs, boil them up, chop them and make egg salad sandwiches. Pre-make them and slice them diagonally and arrange them nicely on a platter. Like the previous poster said, put out some chips/dip, pretzels, veggies/dip, bottles of soda. If you've got nuts or candy, put some out in a dish. If you've got salad veggies, chop some up and make a tossed salad and put out some dressings.

I also do a pasta salad that is as quick as cooking the noodles and mixing. I use mayo, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese. Sometimes I dice up tomato and toss it in. It's one of those dishes everyone always asks me to bring to potluck events.

Is the Pampered Chef consultant making a dish during the party? I know they usually do, so that's another item you'll have to serve.

Have fun and good luck!

I feel you need to serve something. Maybe make some finger sandwichs with lunch meat. Cut them into small triangles with the crush removed. Veggies and dip.

thanks everyone, looks like I am heading to the store. byeeee

oh p.s. anyone want to come to a candles party?? LOL

If you invited people for the party, you need to serve snacks and something to drink. There is no need to be elaborate, but anything with an invitation requires a certain amount of "hostessing".

I was invited one time to a friends house for tea. Several other people were invited and she sent actual invitations - which led me to believe it was more than a casual invite. The day of the party, I show up and her house is a mess and she's in her slippers. I felt very awkward as she proceeded to make a can of juice, grab some plastic cups out of the dish drainer, unwrap a package of storebought muffins, and clear off space for us to sit. I can tell the others felt weird too. There was nothing to show she'd done any kind of preparation which sort of led me to believe she had forgotten she invited us.

I'm not one for fancy and love informal drop-in visitors, but I think making sure there are places for everyone to sit and a little something prepared for the guests is a necessity anytime you send an invitation. If you really can't do that, I think it would be better to call around and cancel the party.

Ok, I took some tylenol, went shopping and my house is ALWAYS clean. I am all ready to be the host-ess with the most-ess ............ party:

Thanks again, I knew just a simple post and the DIS could get me motivated to move my butt :thumbsup2
