To Personalize or not to Personalize-that is the Question

There are so many cute Disney T-shirts, hats, not to mention Mickey ears that you can put your kids name on. Does anyone do that? I always stay away from personalizing our everyday things because I don't want anyone calling my kids by name, maybe confusing them enough to do what the adult says. But isn't that just part of WDW to have Mickey Ears with your name on it? What do you guys do?

I figured that anyone within earshot of my kids is going to be able to figure out their name anyway. XX do you want an ice cream, XX come see Mickey Mouse? etc.

So we do allow them to wear personalized items and I found the kids got a kick of CM's and characters greeting them by name and signing the autograph books personally.

Of course this goes hand in hand with teaching them the rules on "strangers" and of course staying together with the group.

I think it depends on your kid. Mine was always suspicious of strangers and NOT going anywhere with anyone unless I told him it was okay.

My daughter was 5 when we got her personalized ears and didn't leave our side anyway, so I wasn't worried. And it's not like she wears her ears to the mall! There are some places I do personalized (like Mickey ears in WDW) and some places I don't (like her backpack).

I'm weary of having things personalized too but DS is always with us at this point (especially in Disney) so getting things personalized is okay for now. We got him the ears last time. Overall personalized things aren't really my thing but once in awhile, I love finding the cute stuff and getting it done!

Side note - where do you get personalized ears?

We got ours in the shop right after castle on the right-hand side. I don't know the name of the shop though but just ask around and CMs will steer you in the right direction. :)

I tend to agree with the pp's - ds loves to introduce himself to everyone, not to mention that I am constantly calling to him, that I don't worry about having his name on stuff. I concentrate on telling him he isn't to go anywhere without permission from mom or dad, which seems like a clearer limit. Besides, since he is always introducing himself to people, he doesn't get too surprised that complete strangers know his name - and knowing his name doesn't count as a sign of trust with him, afaik.

And dd stays pretty much glued to me, anyhow...

(I didn't get anything personalized, but that was just because I didn't feel like it. I think ds wore his flag football shirt one day, which has his name on it, however.)

Yeah, you should be fine. Just keep reminding them to stay close and not wander off. Besides, even if someone didn't know your kids' names and wanted them to come they could always just yell "Hey you, come here!"

When we were in WDW with my sister-in-law she insisted on everyone calling my niece (5 at the time) "Sally" (her real name in Alexandria, or Lexz (y), no idea where Sally came from ) so if a stranger hollered "Lexz" she wouldn't go to them. The thing I didn't understand was that some one could have called "Sally!" and she still would have come to them!

Really, I think you are worrying for no reason. :) I mean, your kids will be with you, won't they? Also, I agree with the prior poster, who said someone could just overhear you say their name.
Have a great trip!

I'm going with personalised because frankly I can't be doing with bickering over who has whos ears when they get muddled up!

Also- a plus side- my youngest daughter is in speech therapy and gets quite flustered if people don't catch her name when she says it if asked (and so repeats quieter, and quieter in case they're asking because she was wrong first time) and my youngest son doesn't talk a great deal yet but does know his name refers to him and people are speaking to him (he'll be 18m at time of travel) so labelling them will mean they get more character interaction I hope.
