most airlines will invoke the Warsaw Convention which limits their liability to roughly $20 per kilogram of luggage of checked luggage (note it's higher for carry on luggage). i'd definitely be careful what you have in your checked bag and if necessary, have travel insurance for your camera equipment. i used to carry my flashes in my checked luggage until i had one stolen recently (as well as several rechargeable batteries, my electric razor, and a few other items) out of my locked bag. the lock was cut off. my colleague overseas just had his nice carbon fibre tripod stolen from his luggage in san francisco - with the tsa approved (easy for them to open) lock.
I carry on as well. Back in August when we were in the midst of the big carry-on or not to carry-on security scare there was a lot of talk about this. I called my home insurance company to see if my camera was covered if I was required to check my camera. They confirmed that not only would my camera be covered if it was lost or stolen in the luggage but so would a laptop. I didn't have to check it thankfully. I cannot even imagine the stress I would go through if I had to check my camera. The cheaper lens would be going with me for sure. LOL
I have as many camera bags as the camera store these days. There's never one bag for all situations.
I was just wondering if people could post photos of how and what they pack their camera equipment for air travel and then for walking around. What's your typical kit bag? For example, I have a perfect bag for carry on but it sucks as an everyday walk around camera bag so I'm contemplating bringing both with me....but that would mean packing a large suitcase.
I just thought that photos of the organization of gear might help those of us who seem to entertain an obsession with camera bags.
