At least once a week, I drive on Highway 17 which is one of the only ways to connect Santa Cruz to the rest of the world. It's one of the most dangerous highways in California. Here's a little description of the dangers:

Highway 17's combination of narrow shoulders, dense traffic, sharp turns, blind curves, wandering fauna such as deer and mountain lions, and sudden changes in traffic speeds have to led to driving conditions that result in a number of accidents and fatalities, leading to the reputation of Highway 17 as one of the most dangerous highways in the state. In the winter months, because Highway 17 crosses a high precipitation area in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the roadway can become very slippery from rain or snow, making the road worse. Some sections of 17 have become so notoriously dangerous that they have attained nicknames amongst the locals. (For example, Northbound 17 after Summit Road with its sharp turns and steep slope has been deemed "Valley Surprise" for the fact that many unfamiliar drivers hit the median on their way to Silicon Valley.)

Last year, by the time july had strolled around, over 700 crashes were reported.

Now, you'd think with all the warnings people give each other around here about how dangerous it is to drive that road that people would listen and be cautious on the road.

I've almost been hit a million times, animals have ran into oncoming traffic, causing accidents (we're talking full grown male deer).

Today I saw the worst wreck I'd ever seen in my entire life. I had to pull off the road because I was sobbing. Two cars, both rolled over and the entire roof smashed completely flat against the bottom of the window. I saw body bags being put into ambulances. Blankets and toys littered the road, indicating children either were in the car, or the people driving had children.

So to all the teenagers who are starting to drive, the ones to who drive, and even the adults who do...PLEASE be more careful. I've driven that road probably over 300 times in a year and a half, and I've NEVER been in an accident EVER. It's possible to avoid if you're alert, you're in control of your car, and if you don't have the confidence to be in the fast lane, GET OVER. This is for every road, not just 17.

yep, especially when you drivin' home from the boardwalk at night and its all foggy

That's why I'm terrified of driving. All my friends laugh at me, and act like there's no real threat to driving. Yes, I'll drive eventually but right now I have no place to go so it's not necassary.

There's a residential street a couple blocks down that's the worst street in our neighborhood. It's extremely curvy and the left hand side drops down to a cliff and a forest of trees. Tons of people don't look at the signs and swirve off into the trees...I wish they'd just read all the signs.

for serious... a bunch of my friends drive like maniacs.. i always tell them to slow down and stuff but theyre just so impatient... speeding is not cool... a few people i know have either died or almost died in car accidents... its no joke.. the injuries were terrible and there was a lot of reconstructive surgery.. so just be careful out there guys

I've got backroads galore and they're all covered with extraordinarily terrible frost heaves. One of my friends blew his tire driving to school and another dented his rim. The roads here are horrible, it's like riding in a car with a massage chair in the driver's seat.

I hate driving for fear of getting in an accident. My mom thinks I'm completely weird, because she thought every teenager would be excited about getting their license. I'm not. I hate it when I stop lights are coming up because I'm afraid of not stopping in time and hitting the car in front of me. I'm paranoid, but I do drive slower than I should for that very fear.

You're not the only one! :) I'm freaked out by turning too, like I'm going to hit a car or the curb...

I've been driving for almost three years (a month from today will be three years, haha) and I remember how EXCITED I was about getting my license. It was the greatest feeling ever. Now I really don't like driving...it gets old and stressful because of all the maniacs out there.

I just got my permit, and while I don't speed or anything, I guess I do get a little reckless.
Like, I'll let my mind wander or get distracted when my favorite song comes on the radio, because I have, like, no fear whatsoever of the road.
This kinda reminds me to stop and think a little more though..

I suggest turning the radio off then. :) Or at least turn it way down. ;)

I hate turning. Although I'm pretty good at it, the entrance to our school parking lot is small and I run a little over the curb or skim it trying to get through. I especially hate turning at an intersection. Mostly the big ones with alot of traffic. I also freak out because I think I'm in the wrong lane or I'm going to miss a stop sign..

It doesn't help that if they're doing any construction or an accident has happened on 17 they just send one of the construction workers or policemen out in the street to direct traffic.

UM, HELLO. People are going 50-70 miles an hour on that road, and you're going to send a PERSON to stop 3 ton+ killing machines? I had to swerve into the opposite direction turn lane so I wouldn't slam into the back of a mercedes because they did this on the other side of a blind turn and I was going about 60 miles an hour.

When people are reckless with cars it makes me SO mad, but that's what happens when some people get power: they kinda go insane.

::yes::

I'm scared to death of when I have to start driving. If it was up to me, I'd wait and have my parents/friends drive me around during high school. I'm just incredibly nervous that I'm going to get into a car accident. :sad2:
