The only negative about I-81 I can speak to where I've run into issues is that if there is an accident between south of Harrisonburg in VA to Radford (and possibly beyond, but DD went to college in Radford) it can back you up for hours regardless of the weather. That happened to us at least twice while DD was in school. If anyone has any 81 tips, they’d be appreciated. Says it’s currently an extra hour
That being said, we've frequently driven I-81 in PA with no problems. Even though it's longer, when we go from Northern Va to NY on Friday nights, going US15 to I-81 to I-78 into NJ to I-287 to NY is my preferred route since it avoids traffic hassles on I-495 (DC beltway) and I-95.
