Yep, I really bought into the whole my-prince-will-save-me propaganda as I worked my way through grad school.
When I was in grad school, I took a course in turn of the (20th) century American history. One portion of the course focused on entertainment and the effect of Coney Island on American Culture and the development of theme parks. There were 2 obnoxious guys that just railed against theme parks and their canned entertainment and how places like Disney World prevented people from having "real" experiences and that Disney in general told people how to think.
Finally I asked these two, "Have you ever been to Disney World?"
"Well, no, I would never go to a place like that!!!!"
I said, "Well I have and I like it. I like it a lot. It is fun, pure fun. I went last Christmas with my sister's family and we had a great time making memories with her kids. And this was something different for us because we usually camp at Big Bend National Park at Christmas. You should not be spouting off opinions on topics with which you really have no experience. If you could go and give it a real, unbiased look, which I don't think you could, you might find out something new."
Then everyone else in the classroom started to pipe up about the wonderful memories they had at Disney, too.
I do however, respect those who feel that morally they cannot justify the expense of a Disney vacation when there are people starving in the world. I don't agree, but I can respect that point of view.
