I'm very interested in seeing the Titanic exhibit at the Mercado on our May trip to FL. I'd love to hear opinions of this exhibit from people who have actually seen it. Also, I remember reading that this exhibit isn't permanant and will be moving prior to May 03? Did anyone else read that too? I hope it's not true, I'll be so disappointed. Oh, and how far from Disney's Port Orleans resort is this exhibit? Thanks!

It's at the Mercado on International Drive. Well worth seeing, recreation of parts of the ship including the Grand Staircase. Your tour guide pretends to be a crew member and it's very informative. Actual Titanic items are on show. Usual gift shop at end of tour selling novelty items.

One of my Orlando sources told me that the Titanic Exhibit was due to close at the end of 2002. However, I have heard no confirmation of this yet from any other source, so I have to assume it will continue for the time being. It will be worth checking before you leave, though, on www.titanicshipofdreams.com

I didn't care for the exhibit. I went with a Titanic buff. He enjoyed it. To me most of the recreations looked cheap. The grand staircase particularly looked like plastic to me. There are very few artifacts actually from the Titanic. Most of the artifacts are from the sister ship; which is ok, if what you want is to see what the stuff was like. I particularly didn't enjoy the tour guides. It would've been much more enjoyable if the exhibit were a self-guided tour ---at least for me.

On my trip last May I heard that is was scheduled to close soon, although I did not hear when.

We went last year I think (or was it the year before, can't remember). We thoroughly enjoyed it. We also enjoy the guided aspect of the tour too but, everyone is different & we all like different things. I think it is worth a visit, that way you will know for sure whether you like it or not :)

Hi we visited this exhibition in 2001. We thoroughly enjoyed it. You travelled from the making of the ship - to the sinking - you guide was a person from the ship. My son really enjoyed it especially when you had to touch a block of pretend iceberg - it was really freezing. :D

We visited this last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed the tour guide and felt as if she did an excellent job of transporting us back as if we were actual passengers. I would do it again in a heartbeat.:D

We went in May of 2000 and thought it was wonderful! It's really quite moving if you are into that sort of thing. IMO, the whole exhibit is well done and very interesting and I would go and see it again. You can get coupons for a few dollars off admission in any of those booklets from off-site hotels. Have fun :D !

We went about a week ago. My family and i thought it was wonderful. It was very moving and since I am a very emotional person, this one had me in tears.

They also have the ship deck with a re-creation of the stars on the night the ship sank. It was really hard to be out there. Also when you buy your tickets, it has the name of a perosn on board the ship. You find out at the end if you survived or not. Out of the 3 of us, mine was the only one to die..go figure

If you really feel attached in some way to the Titanic story, you need to go to Halifax where all rescue mission took place. This is truly authentic and moving.
After the great ship sank, the victims and survivors were brought into Halifax. With reverence and actual material from the ship, the Maritime Museum in Halifax devotes a section to the memory of this horrific event. This city has seen much tragedy and with class and respect the memorial allows the visitor to see how this event unfolded.

My sister and were on business and I had time to view in detail on my own. Later we travelled to Fairview cemetary where most victims are buried. There are also several other cemetaries according to religion. This city does not have any signs advertising the display or directions to Fairview, I asked a restaurant server. There is really a Jack Dawson (not the Leonardo character from the movie) buried there. A small, small sign points to the area in this large place, very discreetly.
No flowers or gaudy markers indicated this area, which I found so respectful.

It truly is a display to educate you. In the museum, one can look into portals and see what the different cabin classes looked like.
Actual pieces from the ship are there. Also a moving display of fishing family mementoes: when a ship was wrecked, coastal families would salvage wood from the ship and preserve its memory with carved picture frames, game boards, etc. It was done with respect to the victims.
Mrs. Astor's life jacket is there as well as many other items. A film in a small theatre shows actual footage from the rescue mission. I did not know they were finding victims all the way into June of that year. Can you imagine?
The Titanic tragedy also laid the outline for future missions: shortly after this two ships collided in Halifax harbor setting off an explosion that rocked the entire city and burnt half of it in a firestorm. One ship was loaded with explosives. This event's rescue was aided with the Titanic's experience.
Can you imagine being there in Halifax when they brought the sad cargo of victims in?

Apart from Tragedy, Halifax is a vibrant awesome city that I can't wait to visit. All of Nova Scotia is a incredible Canadian island. Drive around to the north and stay in Bed and breakfast inns. Go to hear Celtic music as you've never been entertained before.

I live over 4 hours by plane to this province (Nova Scotia which means New Scotland) and I'd love to take my children one day. As a Canadian, I am proud of our respect and knowledge of history. We are very understated people and yet I have to encourage our great neighbors to the south (that's you Americans!) to investigate some of our treasures.
We love the USA and love Americans so come visit us. THere is more to this country than Toronto or MOntreal. THere is more to this country than beer and snow! Our summers are awesome and you dollar goes a long way.
I live in the prairies in the province of Manitoba. The queen of England will be here next week so we are not that unknown a place.
Ok, I am done!!!!

sillyminny: Thanks for all that great info on the Titanic and Halifax. I have promised my family we will go to the East Coast (i.e. Canadian Maritimes) on our next family trip after Walt Disney World. My eldest daughter is fascinated by the Titanic story still.
I did not know about these things at Halifax. Too funny for me, Canadian born & bred, to find out about this on boards for planning our trip to Disney World!
