Tips for pay as you go SIM cards from USA for California and Mexico?

Looking at what options there are for SIM cards for travel.

We will be going shopping across the border a couple weeks before we head to Mexico for a week. Then heading to Disneyland 3 weeks later.

Anyone purchased a SIM card pay as you go plan that might work?
