Tips for a great autograph book?

We are bringing our own autograph book with us. We're using a Creative Memories 5x7 scrapbook. We plan on putting a photo of the kids with the character beside each signature.

Any other tips about having a good autograph book?

Are you planning on putting the photo and the signature on the same page, or side by side? It might be too small for a photo and a signature on one page. You might find it easier to bring cardstock for the charachters to sign and have the scrapbook ready to mount the signatures and photos in. I have used index cards in the past and put them in the pages with photo corners. Also, you can pick up stickers at the dollar store or party store and decorate the pages with them. I've used printable coloring pages in the past as scrapbook pages, just print them onto cardstock...bring some crayons with you so the kids have something to do while waiting in line. Good luck!

The photos will be on the opposing page... if that makes any sense. So, photo will be on one page and then the opposing page will have the photo. I have a bunch of pages, so this should go pretty well. If we have a photo with lots of princesses, for example, I'll have them all sign on one page and then put the photo on the opposing page. That sort of thing.

I'm afraid that if I did index cards, I'd lose them! :lmao:

You should be fine with opposing pages. :) Have fun with it. This year I'm going to do a bit different....I've made a shutterfly book with the charachters on different pages, we'll get their autographs and then I plan on scanning those pages and reusing them as the background page for the new photo book, putting the pics on the signed page. I think it will work, but if not, we've got a pretty cool autograph book atleast.

I used to be a CMC and I have made my own autograph books using CM products for the past 2 trips.

What I did was bring a storybox set of pages. They come in (do they still sell them) the nice little plastic box which was perfect for storage. While waiting in line I selected which color paper I wanted and had it ready to go when we got to the front. After getting the signature, I placed the paper in the back. When we got home I placed in a 5x7 album and mounted the photos on matching paper with what was leftover form the pack.

Good luck!

You could always try something like this:

I was going to write up a tutorial on how to do this sometime. If anyone would be interested in how to do that I will try and get my act together and do it. It's actually a lot easier than one might think.

Sarah - I also got a 7x7 Micky Album in red and bought the snap pack to go with it for my 8 year old to create her own album when we return. :)

Sorry for the wait. I will try and work on a tutorial for everyone on the forums to look at with pictures of the process.

You'll need:

Paper or signature book (preferably w/white paper)
Thick Black Marker (kids scented felt could work too though I used a perm. marker and for best results I recommend it)
Flatbed scanner or All-in-One w/flatbed
Photo editing software (I will demonstrate with Photoshop later)

The easiest way to explain it is this:

We bought an autograph book down in Disneyland, but we took a couple of thick permanent markers with us because I knew that I was going to do this. And when I say thick I don't mean a regular tipped sharpie. I mean something bigger than that, you need like a good width when they sign their name. I would say something that makes a good 1/4" wide stroke or so (I suggest a round tip too, chisel tips give mixed results).

Get all of your characters to sign with the felt, don't worry too much about bleed through as that can be corrected later. So long as each signature looks fluidic and smooth.

Once you get home, all you have to do is scan each signature into its own file, any type will do, jpg is fine, quality won't make too much of a diff.

For each signature you have to use photoshop to clear the white background so that the signature is sitting on a transparent background. Then you will open the photo you and the character and either place or copy and paste, however...to get the signature onto the photo. Move it into a good place. Now play with the blending options of the signature layer. If you aren't too familiar with photoshop don't worry, this part is a lot of trial and error and I will show some of my favourite options when I write the tutorial. As you can see from the pic I posted I used things like a gradient overlay a light drop shadow, and and outer glow. I framed a picture with Pluto because I loved what I did with it in Photoshop.

I posted this in another thread, but this one is actually from Disney World. I only did a few from our WDW trip in '09. Kinda got side tracked and never got back to extracting the signatures from the book. I did a few, so far this one and another I have with Chip and Dale are my favourites.

Those photographs/edits are awesome. I was thinking of doing a character only book, but I love what you were able to do with the signature on the actual picture.

I can't wait to see your tutorial on it so I might be able to apply it to my own pictures in the future.

I will start work on it this week. I could see myself having it posted in a week and a half, maybe two. What I will do is do a complete walkthrough on a photo I haven't done yet, that way I'm actually being productive on top of being productive LOL!

I would be interested in your tutorial. Have done traditional autograph books. But your idea is great!:lovestruc

Those are great and what a cute idea. I'm pretty fluent in photoshop, so I can see right away how to do this. I've been toying with the idea of printing up a fancy autograph book, but I like this so much that it's my new plan. Thanks!

Unfortunately I've had to push this back a bit, wedding plans and house hunting have gotten in the way, and in all the madness I still haven't been able to find either the scans of the signatures I took or the autograph book itself. What I might do is make up a mock signature (it won't be anything as good as the real thing though) and scan that and do it that way.

BTW Reign, that is SO cool! A new idea to do for my next trip ;)

Thanks a lot, it's a great thing to do and sure makes your pictures that much extra special.

Awesome! This is like one of the easiest things to do in photoshop. Glad you like the idea. Just as a warning that I have learned first hand. Be careful of where you place the autographs on the photos if you intend to have them printed. If they are too close to the edges they may have to be cropped slightly and that might inadvertently cut off part of the signature.

Good advice. I actually think I'll be making a photobook of our whole trip and including these, so it won't be an issue in that. I think this will look so slick in the book. I might even make the signature overlap the picture and spill onto the background. Yours have gotten me imagining just how I will want it to look. I'm excited. :goodvibes

That sounds like an interesting idea. My fiancé is a scrapbooker and am sure she would love this idea.
