Anyone recently been on a cruise? I thought I read somewhere that you can now tip on the app? Is that true? New to cruising and want to pre pay for gratuities but if I can do this on the app once we get there I'd do that. Thanks

Just got off the Disney Dream this morning and that is partially correct! When you buy an alcoholic beverage or a specialty coffee, they won't take your card or have you sign a receipt. They'll ask for your room number and you can go on the app following the purchase to add a tip! Pre-paying for the standard gratuities (for the server, head server, assistant server and host/hostess) can be done via phone up to three days before sail date.

this is for tipping for purchases at cove, drinks at dinner etc etc. For gratuities for your server/stateroom attendant etc it is still either pre pay or they charge it to the room

I'll bring cash to tip. We usually bring about $50 in singles.

I know we now live in a digital world but the less I have to do on the app the better IMO. Also some have reported glitches with tipping on the app though that may have been the first cruise, I can't remember.

I will say the app tipping was hit or miss. The app asks for a pin but mine only worked half the time. I kept having to contact GS and/or concierge to reset it for me and by the time that was done the check would be closed.

Curious how much you all typically tip for say a drink of the day or a can of monster energy drink?

I had this issue too! Didn't have a working pin to get a placeholder so I went up to Guest Services to create new one and they preferred to reserve the placeholder right at the desk.

For the most part, I tip 1-2 dollars per drink depending on the drink.

I prefer to tip cash, but I'll try to utilize the app as much as possible. Is DCL trying to dissuade from cash tips or is it still "acceptable" given the current times?

When we placed a room service order we asked if a cash tip was OK and we were told yes, so that's what we did (on 8/23). We also had PIN problems with the app.

I think we will bring cash, we usually don't carry much around the ship with us, but I think for now cash will work for the bars.
It's a new world, in the past we would lock wallets our in the safe and only take them our for port days.

This is exactly what I said and I had did a thread about that to be diligent about keeping an eye on your folio so you could add a tip if you want to especially on the private island Wi-Fi was not working for me so we actually went to find our bartender that was bringing us drinks later on and we gave them cash

When would the CM know a tip has been given?

LAX

If I remember correctly, you had 4 hours to add a tip to an open transaction. It would automatically close if you didn’t add a tip. I would assume they would know about a tip when the transaction closed.
