I would prefer to give my servers their tips in cash.

If I do not want it added to my bill automatically do I have to do something when I register. I thought I read somewhere they will add it to your bill unless you specify at the begining of the cruise. I might be thinking of another cruise line but just thought I would check,

Thanks

Kim

You don't have to do anything special if you prefer to pay them in cash. As a matter of fact, we did the same thing. The night before your last night, the Stateroom Hostess will bring you an envelope for each of your servers: head server, server, and assistant server, (and also one for the hostess). You then have the option of putting the money in the envelope and presenting it to them the next night at dinner or going to guest services to have it added to your bill.

On some other cruise lines, they add the tips to everyone's stateroom account. Passengers can then adjust upward or downward if they choose.

On DCL, guests receive envelopes. You can charge the tips to your stateroom and put a voucher into each envelope, or you can put cash into each envelope.

Is seems easier and safer not to use cash -- for the passenger and the crew member. I'm curious why you would prefer to give your servers their tips in cash?

I also like to tip in cash....no specific reason....just like to!!! I guess it feels more tangible to me, plus, I like having less on my CC when I get home.

Thanks for the info.

I also am not sure why, I just prefer to give cash.

We've noticed a decreased level of service when tips are deemed to be "automatic" vs. discretionary - ie: cash.

Last time at WDW, we were a party of 9 so 18% gratuity was automatically added to every dining bill - we've never been ignored so...

Also, Princess gives you this option and again, the level of service was compromised.

We prefer to pay the gratuity ourselves even if cash is more inconvenient. Then the tip becomes a gratuity for service and not a union entitlement.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I understood the thread to be discussing HOW you pay the tip, not if it is AUTOMATICALLY added to your bill.

On DCL you can choose to pay them in CASH or have it added to your account, or even worse, not leave a tip at all.

This is done at the end of the cruise, so the staff should be on their best behavior the entire cruise.

Actually, the OP wrote, "I thought I read somewhere they will add it to your bill unless you specify at the begining of the cruise" -- so this thread did involve the question of whether DCL adds gratuites automatically.

The answer was that some cruise lines do, but DCL doesn't.

Disney with Triplets made a point about a decreased level of service in situations where tips are automatic rather than at the guests' discretion.

On DCL, tips are automatic for paid beverages. But I thought the service in the bars was very good anyway.

For those who have the cash on them and don't want stuff on the Credit Card afterward, you can go to guest services and pay your KTTW charges in Cash. The CMs get the same amount whether it's in a voucher or actual cash.
