I just called to have pizza delievered. I rarely have anything delievered. They charge a delivery fee of 15% which they explained "goes to the driver to cover gas and will appear on your credit card as gratuity" this fee is $5.55,, so does this mean I do not need to tip? Or should I still tip? When I asked the guy on the phone he said the driver gets the 5.55, it is up to you if you want to tip him, too.

$5.55 will cover a lot of gas, unless he's driving a Hummer he's got his tip built in.

:confused3
Ok I felt that way too, but still feel like a heel not tipping. I kind of got the feeling he was tipping himself on the phone, he was having trouble explaining the fee. When I asked how much the driver got, he said all of it for gas. I usually give 5 bucks for pizza, so I feel like he is covered. So why do I feel guilty not "tipping" ?

You are tipping, just like in a restaurant when the party is 8 or more has an automatic 15% gratuity built in. No, you're not handing him that couple of bucks in cash, but you have tipped him. Honestly, it sounds like he's being a bit dishonest in that the tip is already added, but he's fishing for more.

I have not heard of a 15% delivery fee. That is really high. Around here delivery fee is $1-2 for pizza places. I do still tip my regular amount.

I would order from a different place next time.

I worked at Pizza Hut in college, and have a few friends who still work there, and they get $.75 for every delivery they make, though the delivery charge is much higher than that. We always tip on top of the charge.

The place that occasionally delivers a pizza for us has written on the receipt "Delivery Fee is NOT paid directly to the driver and is NOT considered a gratuity" so I do tip the driver in the case of my local place.

If I had your situation, I would not tip.

I honestly HATE the 'delivery fee', so I rarely get it delivered. Imagine the $5.55 fee X25 customers or however many the driver goes to on a typical night. He's not using anywhere near that much gas. At $4. a gallon, even if he had to travel 5 miles round trip to deliver your pizza, he's probably not using more than $1 worth of gas.

Good Point. It doesn't use more gas to deliver a more expensive pizza than it does to deliver a plain inexpensive one. :sad2:

When we get a pizza or chinese delivered there is usually a $2 delivery fee. It doesn't say where it goes though. Since we usually get the same folks deliver our food we tip an additional $2-3 bucks. Our food is always delivered quickly, fresh and the drivers are really friendly. I like to think it's because we always tip them. ;)

So, is the $5.50 the only payment the driver gets-thus covering his fuel and so forth or did you understand that he was also compensated for the work he was doing for the pizza company?

When my husband delivered pizza in college, the delivery fees went to the owner, not to the drivers (even though they said it was for gas). So yes, we always tip on top of any delivery charge.

I think that delivery fee is HUGE! I've never seen anything more than a flat $2.

The way I understand it, most delivery people use their own cars and have to pay for their own gas, etc. So, it seems completely unjustified that the employers keep the delivery fee! I always assumed it went to the driver, but still tipped a few bucks more.

When the kid arrived, the amount was HAND WRITTEN in under gratuity. I asked him what was going on and he said the manager (who I spoke with on the phone) said it was ok to add it as a delivery fee since he had been delivering pizza all day and out of 14 deliveries only 1 person had tipped and it was only 2 bucks. I signed the receipt let the kid go and called. I got the same person, claiming to be the manager who agreed he had told the kid to do it. I explained I would be complaining the the owner because I felt it was dishonest. I feel bad for the kid who keeps getting stiffed but come one now. The owner called me back today and left a vm apologizing, but I have not called him back yet. I also want to mention that the very expensive pizza was not good, so it is a moot point anyway. We will not be ordering again. To be honest, even without the tip debacle we would not have ordered there again. Can't be gross, too expensive, and rip people off on the tip. lol. Bad business strategy.

That is horrible! How dare they!? And the pizza was bad on top of it all :sad2: I feel lucky, the place we order from has free delivery (with $10 minimum order) and the pizza, calzones, and salads are delicious. We usually tip the guy 10 to 15%. I'm sure you'll find a better place for the future!

Wow! That is ridiculous to require a 15% gratuity to make up for the rest of the tips he didn't get that day. I would complain too...

:scared1::scared1: It's not your responsibility to make up for the lack of tips from 12 other customers!

I would be writing a letter to the owner (and corporate if this is a chain) explaining what happened and telling them that it is NOT acceptable to me, and that I would not be using their services ever again.

And I would tell all my friends.

not acceptable behavior on the part of the manager or driver.

I suspect the manager/owner whomever did it (added the "delivery fee") did so in order to cut back on the amount of money he has to pay the driver. The driver has to make minimum wage and I am sure they expect most of the cost to be made in tips.
