I heard this information on CNN yesterday and posted it on the community forum but meant to get it over here also.

Now whether you blame the banks or the politicians for these ridiculous rise in fees the fact remains that you as a consumer have a lot of choices out there. Big banks are counting on the fact that most of its customers will be too lazy to bother with changing so will simply accept the fees.

Not me, simply put there are just way too many options for me to willing give Bank of America 60-200 bucks a year of MY money. I put in the 200 because now BoA makes folks carry a huge balance (1500) bucks in a basic checking account or you get hit with $15 dollar service fee.

Anyway here are some links, that might be informative.

Well said Eliza. Most people spend to much because they don't take the time to look around and check prices on banks, insurance, cable and other items that we get comfortable with.

I have been a credit union devotee since 1983! My very first? Disneyland Federal Credit Union.

The two to which I belong have branches all over the world. There are no fees with either as long as $75 (combined) is maintained in one and $750 (checking) is maintained in the other. I have no problem with their very minimal requireed minimum balances because this strengthens the credit union, which I want to see succeed. My primary credit union into which the majority of my income flows has no local branch whatsoever. I utilize other local credit unions and their ATM machines to make deposits and cash withdrawals free of charge when I need to. I can also deposit checks via my scanner at home. And I have the iPhone and iPad apps for both credit unions allowing me to transfer funds, pay bills, etc., no matter where I am.

Make sure you do your homework. Research the services that are important to you and make sure the credit union you join has them. Also note that most credit unions will do a credit check on you to ensure you're a positive addition to the union.
