I was going over our receipts from last years trip and noticed that at the TS meals, they automatically charged 18% tip to our alcoholic beverages. There were only two of us. Do they always do this? Do they do this at the bars also?

The tip is put there to make sure you tip. But you are not required to tip it. You can tip whatever you want, but if it is a charge, you will need to tell your server the amount you do want to tip, so they don't automatically run it with the 18% tip.

Thanks!

So does this also happen at the bars?

I'm assuming we're talking large parties here, right? I've never noticed an automatic gratuity for alcoholic beverages when we've been there with less than 6 people...then they charge the 18% on the entire bill. Or are you talking about taxes on drinks?

Just tips on the drinks. Like I said, when we were there, I noticed that all our drinks already had 18% added to them. I was wondering if this happens to everyone, everywhere, or just because we were on DDP.

But I also want to know, when you are at a bar, do they also automatically add the 18% tip or not.

Edit: Wow I didn't even realize that I put "tax" on the title, when I meant tip. Sorry.

Must be a DDP thing. We've never done the DDP and have never been charged gratuity at a table or at the bar.

The way I understand things if you are using DDP to purchase your meal, any additional items you purchase OOP (extra sides, alcoholic beverages, etc) will have the 18% gratuity automatically applied.

I'm gonna need to pull out my passporter from last year to look at our receipts but this sounds a bit odd to me. Do they do this at the pool bars too? Any info would be helpful before I leave. TIA!

I know, my Passporter is at home (as in my parents' house, whereas I stay with my boyfriend) and most of our bar drinks from last trip we paid for in cash. So I don't have a receipt at all.

I'm going to try to run home later after my boyfriend gets out of work (I got the slow cooker going and am afraid to leave it).

It must be a DDP thing. We use the DDE card and tips are never included.

It is a DDP thing. As someone said above, when you order items not covered by the DDP, they automatically put an 18% gratuity on it. You are NOT required to tip this, but they put it there to make sure people understand that these items are not included on the DDP and neither is the tip for them included in the "tip included" portion of the DDP, as some may assume. You need to tip separately, so it is put there more educationally. It is not required. Tip your usual amount, though, which ideally shoudl be at minimum 15% for adequate service, and more for exceptional (and lower if the service is not adequate).

What?

Yes you are required to pay the 18% grat on an alcoholic drink when you are on the dining plan. Its included in the bill. Its not a suggestion, or an idea, its simply included. IF you don't like that, then you have the offer to not be on the DDP.

Nope... you are not required to tip 18% on OOP items, even on the dining plan... because by definition, OOP items are not dining plan items. The automatic 18% tip included in the dining plan for dining plan items was negotiated between Disney and the servers, and is not optional. But the tip on out of pocket items is up to the diner, because those items (by definition) are not part of the dining plan.

Most people pay the 18% because it's there, but if one wants to tip more or less than 18% on the non-DDP items like alcoholic drinks, they can.

Thanks everyone for their input. This tip thing with the DDP I'm assuming will change next year when DDP goes tip free.

But talking about all this makes me think... I'm wondering if next year... they will do something similar with the DDP where they will add the 18% tip on the regular receipt (I'm not sure if the receipt will show cost of all dishes, or zeros like it does now... and then have 18% added at the bottom of the receipt already)... to make sure that people know to tip.. like some of you are saying they are doing with the drinks now.

Does that make sense?

Yes, BeckWhy, this is totally my assumption as well. I believe they will, but we won't know for sure until 08!

Thanks for the clarification - that's really good to know :)

When you are at a bar or pool bar, they do NOT add 18% to your bill. I always pay in cash, but if you charge it via credit card or charge it to your room, then have a place on the bill for you to add your gratuity if you so desire. Never do they automatically add 18% at a pool bar.

Thanks! But don't they scan your credit card/room charge and then give you another receipt where you put down how much tip you want to give and the total you are charging?

I guess in a round about way that is what I was trying to convey!! You can add a tip to your CC or room charge when they present you with the bill to sign.
