Tuesday 14th August
We were all up and about at the usual time and heading for Animal Kingdom just before 9am. As its the closest park to the villa we were parking and heading in at about 5 past 9. We did the usual bag check then went in through the Rainforest Café where there was no one in front of us.
Once through we headed for the Safari as we hadnt done that yet this visit. On the way we stopped for a bit of pin trading and spotted Vernon on the DVC stand, he recognised my Dibb lanyard (the only person on this trip that did) and we had a quick chat and a photo. As hard as I tried he wouldnt be pressed on Contemporary DVC
We got to the safari and there wasnt much of a wait as most of the early park visitors head for Everest first now and we were soon on our way. We saw loads of animals including Rhinos, Elephants and even the three elusive Cheetahs which up until now Id never seen and assumed were just made up by Disney to make the ride sounds more interesting. We noticed the absence of Miss what ever her name was who talked about the Thompsons Gazelle and the whole spiel about saving Little Red.
The heat was building nicely and we were already at oven roasting temperature so we stopped at Tusker House for probably the last time as its closing to make way for Donald and his breakfast. We had a chocolate cake for DS (effects of the dining plan are felt here as previously you got a lovely slice of chocolate cake but now you get a small amount in a pre packed container), a croissant for DD, a muffin for DH and a cinnamon bun for me. DH and I also had a coffee while the kids had drinks wed brought from the villa.
Once we were refreshed we set off for the Jungle Trail as DH had not done this before. He was decidedly under whelmed as most of the animals were grabbing even the smallest bit of shade, which was nowhere near any of the viewing areas so all we saw were lots of empty spaces. We were all hot again so a stint on Khali was needed, DH went with the kids first and DD got soaked with DS getting only a little bit wet. I went on with them next and we managed to avoid the big soaking and I stayed reasonably dry. I havent been on this in a while but when you went down the other side of the first ramp there used to be a geyser that shot water over whoever had their back to it but this seems to have gone.
We decided to dry off on Everest - well everyone but me so I held the bags while the rest of the gang went on. I spotted DH waving as they set off so I managed to get this photo of them on the way down - yes DH is the big one in the pink shirt.
We were all hot and tired so we decided to come back to the villa to cool off.
The kids got some McD fries and we did Its a Bugs Life before we finally left. I stopped at the pin cart on the way out were we got an Animal Kingdom pin Id been looking for and then we had a quick look at a cute anteater who was much bigger than we thought. We tried not to suffer first degree burns from the fabric seats in the car.
Back at the villa we thought wed try the small communal pool at Sunset Lakes as it was very close to the villa so we grabbed a few drinks and went over. The gate door was on the latch and instead of leaving it that way DH shut it on the way in (remember this as its important) The pool is in the sun all day and it was like a hot bath. We had it to ourselves and used a couple of the lilos in there. DD spotted a couple of large wasps and got scared and wanted to leave. This is when the problems started, I tried the gate and it was locked. There was no other way out and no sign of anyone else around. DH suggested I climb over but as the fence was over 5ft high I told him what he could do with his suggestion. DD was getting worried now and started to get agitated so it looked like I was climbing over - there were two chairs by the pool and we pulled these over and I climbed on one and put one on the other side of the gate. When I got over in as dignified way as possible and with very few swear words I went back to the villa to see if the key for the gate was with the villa keys. It wasnt so I called the management company. Wed spoken to them a few times this holiday and they were really nice. I explained what a numpty DH was and trying not to laugh she asked me to give her 5 minutes to make a few calls and shes call me back.
She called right back and said that shed rung a friend of hers who had a villa a few doors away and who would go down to the pool to let them out. She also said shes e-mail the owners to let them know so that they could leave a key somewhere in the villa. I walked back to the pool and a very nice lady from the UK opened the gate and let DD and DS out. DH decided to stay by the pool for a while longer so he wedged the gate open so he wouldnt get locked in again.
The kids came back to the villa and got into their own pool where they immediately started arguing. I called them in and got them showered, changed and in separate rooms for a while to chill out. DH came back and chilled by our pool for an hour or so. We were all hungry so we decided to go to the Outback Steakhouse for dinner and got there just after 4. We had a nice meal which consisted of 4 steaks and various sides. I had the baked potato but the skin was covered in so much salt I couldnt eat it . I also had a 2 for the price of one cocktails and our server recommended a frozen peach Bellini with champagne, iced vodka and peach schnapps which was delicious. It was so delicious I forgot to take a photo of anything else
There was half a steak left which we got boxed up and took back to the villa for DS to eat tomorrow. We were too full for desert so we headed back to the villa where the kids went swimming. DS managed to hurt his side as he jumped in and it came up in a big bruise right way so he came in and just chilled up in his room for the rest of the evening. There was a big thunderstorm about 7 ish which is the first one weve seen in weeks.
Tomorrow - A last bit of shopping and doing most of the packing before leaving the villa on Thursday.
