Day 17 - The Move to OKW and Magic Kingdom
I was up around 7am, I caught up on the trippies and did a last bit of surfing on the villas free internet access. DS and DH were up around half 7, we had breakfast and then finished the packing. Id packed 2 suitcases fully for the return journey - theses mainly contained stuff we had bought and bits and pieces we wouldnt need again. The rest was just slung in our bags in a haphazard way to be sorted out at OKW. DD got up around half 8 and onec she had breakfast we did a final check of the villa and said goodbye until next year.
We were on the road to OKW just after 9am and we were checking in about quarter past. There were a couple of other people checking in but quite a few CMs at the desks so I was next in line, I got Mike who was earning his ears. Luckily he had another CM with him who was supervising. Our room wasnt ready so I asked if there were any that we could have right away. They did some searching and came up with a 2 bed, which we could have now. The location was OK but it was on the ground floor. Our request was for a high floor as we like the view so I was in two minds about taking it. DH said to go for it as it meant we could get into the room immediately and also he wouldnt have to lug the cases up 3 flights of stairs in the Florida heat (there are no lifts at OKW). we took the room. It was in building 53, which is close to the South Point bus stop and near a quiet pool.
The rooms were as nice as last year, we had a king size bedroom suite with Jacuzzi bath, a bathroom with walk in shower, a large living room / full size kitchen, a second bedroom with two queen beds and bathroom, a laundry room and a large patio. The only thing I didnt like was that it was surrounded by dense foliage, which made it feel very dark and you needed the lights on even during the day. Never mind at least we were here, but to be honest I probably wouldnt take a ground floor room again although there were other ground floor rooms without the jungle surrounding them, which would have been brighter. Anyway - we paid for the dining plan, got the mountain of info they give you at check in and were all set.
First things first and we unpacked our stuff and managed to make it look like a bomb site within half an hour. DH & I had some coffee while the kids argued over who was in charge of the remote control in the second bedroom. We all wanted a swim in the main pool and as we needed to get milk and stuff afterwards we decided to take the car. It was around 11am and the pool wasnt that busy. We had loads of goes on the slides, checked out the Jacuzzi, which was so big that you could actually swim in it, and generally messed about. A little while later DD decided she was hungry so it was time to put the dining plan to the test. We used one of our CS credits each and had 2 x burgers & fries, 1 x chicken strips & fries, 1 turkey sandwich, 2 sodas, 2 smoothies, 1 piece of key lime pie, 2 ice creams and a Mickey ice cream cookie bar. The good thing with the ice creams was that you could go back and get them when you were ready otherwise they would have been a melted blob by the time you finished your lunch. There was a ton to eat and way more than we would have normally got.
Once we had eaten and were reasonably dry we went to Goodings for some basic supplies. What a rip off this place is. Coke was $0.99c at Walgreens and $1.89 at Goodings and the White Zinfandel was $7.99at Publix and a whopping $12.99 at Goodings. At those prices you would have been better off shopping in the resort and saving yourself the journey.
We came back and I dropped the supplies off while everyone else went to the quiet pool. It only took me a few minutes and I started to walk over to the lads. Now you may have noticed an absence of a little four letter word in the trippies so far (well this is a family site) RAIN - well apart from two short downpours which didnt really affect us, we have had no rain at all. OMG shock horror, August and no rain, what is the world coming to. Anyway in honour of our arrival at OKW it starts to rain. I got to the quiet pool and jumped in and it was really funny swimming in the rain. Unfortunately within a few minutes the thunder started so we all got out. We took shelter in the laundry room and as we could still see patches of blue sky decided to wait until the storm passed. The only other family at the pool decided to call it a day and left.
The thunder lasted for about 15 minutes and once it had passed we got back in the pool. Id say we had it to ourselves for about 40 minutes before 3 other people arrived. DD & I went back to the room just after 2pm and told the boys to be back around 3pm. I got a shower and DD wanted to get into the enormous Jacuzzi bath and watch TV. She stayed in there for about half an hour and DS got in when he got back. DS & DD were tired and didnt want to go out but we are at Disney and I had an itinerary and todays itinerary said MK with a 6:30pm ADR at Crystal Palace.
From memory, the busses usually run every 15 minutes so we left at quarter past to get our bus to the MK. We had just missed one so the next one came at half 3 and there was us and another family on it. When we arrived at the MK bus depot we spotted these ducks who were going to visit to their relations and couldnt decide which bus to take.
The plan at MK was for DS to get a hair cut and for DD and DH to watch Cinderellabration. DH & DD set off while DH & I joined the line for the barbers. There were about 6 people in front of us including one baby who was getting his my first haircut. Unfortunately, he didnt want a hair cut but his mother obviously did and insisted he get one despite the fact he was screaming the place down (and that was even before he got in the barbers chair.) Once the little darling left it became a lot quieter and it was soon DSs turn. He got a number 1 and ended up looking like a marine (or a convict) but it will keep him nice and cool in this heat.
Just as we finished DH & DD called on the radio to say that due to inclement weather the Cinderellabration show was cut short so they will have to see it again. We stopped at the Main Street bakery to use our snack credits and DH & I had a coffee, DS had a piece of cake and we went next door to the ice cream shop to get DD two scoops of ice-cream. Once we had this we made our way into Adventure Land and the kids went into the Swiss Family Tree House armed with the radio. They came out about 10 minutes later and said it was really cool and that DH & I would have to go and see it next time. After the tree house we went to do the Jungle Cruise but our guide was rubbish and really quiet, we were sitting right beside him and were struggling to hear so the people at the back probably had no chance. Our last stop before our ADR was Tikki Room Under New Management as we had never seen it before. What can I say about this fantastic show except you must see it
I have to say though, Im not too sure what this guy was up to
We came out and started to make our way back to CP for our ADR. The boys wanted a restroom stop and while they were taking care of business it started to rain again. We decided to brave it and ran to CP. The check in podium was manic but the CM said this was mainly due to the rain as there were people sheltering, people checking in and people trying to get in without an ADR because it was raining. We didnt have too long to wait and were seated by 6:45pm, which was just as well as DS was getting very agitated with all the people close by. Our server was Jud and as it was our first time at CP he explained where everything was and also what happened with the characters so that we wouldnt miss them. No sooner had he left than Piglet appeared for a hug and a photo.
Once he was safely out of the way we went to check out the buffet. There was a very good selection but only beef or turkey for DS to eat. He had a couple of slices of beef and then went back for some turkey and that was all he ate. We found the quality of the buffet to be very good and there was a varied selection. We didnt have long to wait for more character action, Eeyore was the next followed by Tigger who was very naughty and kept sticking his face right in the camera. Just before Eeyore got to us the music started and all the kids got up and did a conga around the restaurant with the characters. DS joined in and not one to be left out, so did DD. They both really enjoyed this and wanted to do it again. We managed to fit a few more trips up to the buffet before Pooh arrived. (now this isnt a Mkingdon trippie so there will be no Pooh jokes
)
We all had desert and DH & I had a coffee. When it was time for the check Jud asked if we had DSs card with us as he was going to pay for the meal. He took DSs card and came back with the bill and told him he was buying his parents dinner and showed him where to sign. I thought it was a really nice touch and DS was really pleased with himself. It was a great meal and we will be back. We managed to do some pin trading while we were in the restaurant with a guy called Collin form the UK. He was showing people to their tables and whenever he came past he would have different pins what he had traded in the restaurant, I think that we managed to trade about 6 pins with him during the course of our meal.
It was still raining when we left and we didnt fancy hanging around until 10pm for the fireworks so we made our way back to the bus stop No 9. There were a few people already waiting and the bus came along after about 5 minutes. The bus driver was wearing a lanyard and he had the 3rd Pirate pin that DD was after plus two others that she wanted so we did some more trading.
We got back to the room about 9pm and everyone chilled and watched some TV. We could hear fireworks, which I think were the Epcot ones but there was no chance to see them through the rainforest outside our room.
Tomorrow - swimming in the morning then Epcot with an ADR at The Garden Grill
