If you rent from a timeshare resort with special arrangements - something like a three-night rental for $299 rented directly from the resort - then there will usually be a requirement that you attend a timeshare presentation (expect a time commitment of 2+ hours). If you're married, these "deals" require that both wife and husband attend the presentation. You must meet minimum income requirements - I think for most timeshare companies that the minimum is $75000 annually - to be eligible.
If you rent from an owner there's no requirement to attend a timeshare presentation but the sales staff at the resort will offer you some type of inducement to participate in one. Different timeshare companies are more or less persistent than one another in trying to get guests to agree to attend a presentation.
It's the same if you rent through an associated hotel reservation system (such as Hilton, Holiday Inn, Starwood (Sheraton), Marriott, etc.) or if you rent through a travel agent. No presentation requirement but they'll try to get you to agree to one.
