Tight DVC Purchase Timing Question

I was wondering if I'm being realistic...

I'm either going to be in a position to buy (or not buy) around 160-180 DVC points in mid-April. My goal is to have enough for 8-9 nights in a club level studio at AKL.

I'm planning to go to Disney World from August 20-28 (take the grandkids for their first trip!). Right now, I have a res at POFQ. But... If I can do DVC, that'd be my preference.

So, here's the question.... If I don't actually sign a contract or make an offer until mid-April, is there any chance that I'll have enough time to use my DVC points for this stay? Will there only be time with direct, or will resale also work?

And, even if I do have the time, what's the likelihood that a room will be open with just a 1-3 month booking window?

Thanks for your help, experts!

Chances are not at all good you'd get those club level rooms - they probably went by the end of October 2011.

But if you just want to use your DVC points instead of your PO reservation, you are likely - but not certain - to get SOMETHING for that period of time after you close if you close with 3 months to spare. One month - that might involve more luck. It might not be exactly what you are looking for, but my guess is that four months out something will be available for you to use instead of your PO reservation.

You may have options if you are willing to stay somewhere other than AKV club level. You may even be able to stay at AKV, just not club level. We closed on a resale last year in April and were 5 months out for our first trip by the time our points were available to make a reservation. We stayed at OKW and had a wonderful time. It was one of my last choices initially but we absolutely LOVED it! We actually just put an offer in on an add on there and I am so excited!

Good luck with your resale and getting the reservation you want for August!

If you buy direct, there should be little issue in getting a DVC room (not club level) because guides have a way of being able to get new buyers a room on short notice.

The resale process takes around 6 - 8 weeks. So, a mid April buy, would put you in the system in June, only 2 months out. Again, I think you could get something, but may find that you have to move resorts.

I know that buying direct is more, but if you can definitely trade out to DVC, the money you save from the POR reservation may help to offset buying direct vs. resale (not sure, you would have to run the numbers).

Good luck!

Thank you all for your responses. Worst case, we're open to OKW 1 BR, too.

Thanks!

The chances are decent. I joined last year in April, and my Adviser was able to get a reservation for us at AKL Kidani (Savannah View). Which is what we wanted.

Go ahead a take a chance if not, like you said you are open to OKW :thumbsup2

The chances might be decent for a AKV standard or savanna or even OKW, but not for AKV Concierge. Not a chance for that.
