We usually do a package through Disney but we aren't this time. We will be buying 4 day park hoppers with LL.

I guess I'm wondering how long to wait to buy them. Are there typically any summer ticket deals for non CA residents?

Typically, no. But last year there was. I suspect that was based on soft attendance and a lack of interesting new offerings in the parks. Those might not be factors next summer with the 70th anniversary.
Although I'm not as sure the 70th is a biggie. Tiana's might add some interest but it has not proven to hit with any force compared to many additions - probably because it is just a redo of an existing wet ride. Plus, to be honest, there is a "-th" every stinking year at the parks. It might help infrequent visitors feel special (a nice touch) but most of us just yawn thru another made up year celebration ;)

I just heard of something, I believe it was buy 2 days and get a 3rd free. Not sure how that works for 4 days, but I’d look into it.

*edit* actually I think it was for the rest of 2024

They usually have a 3 day ticket deal starting at the end of June lasting into mid September. You get 3 days for about the cost of 2. This year it was open to everyone, but usually it’s just for CA residents. We went for my son’s birthday at the start of July and used the other two days to see the Halloween offerings In September.

Certain reputable third party vendors that many of us use allow you to do an exchange at no cost (a cancellation may incur a small cost but not an exchange). I typically recommend buying tickets as soon as you know you might go.

Buy your 4-day tickets, then if a ticket deal is released that's better for you, UT (for example) will allow you to do an exchange by calling them to switch to the ticket deal.

I completely agree with this. We've had very good luck with ticket swaps through third-party vendors and haven't been charged a fee to exchange, even when the new tickets had a lower cost.

For instance, we went to Universal Orlando last year and had purchased 5-day 3-park tickets, but because of cold temperatures, Volcano Bay was going to be closed for three of the five days. UT allowed us to exchange for 2-park tickets and get a refund because of the lower cost without charging the 5% "restocking fee".
