Ticket offer - can I upgrade free child's ticket?

I just have a question about the offer on Universal's website of buy 1 adult ticket, get 1 under-10 ticket free.

I have 3 children - my youngest is 2 so she is free. One of my boys is 9 so he would qualify for the free pass! My other boy will be 12 when we go to Universal in October. Both DH and I will be purchasing tickets so I'm just wondering if there's any point at all in taking the second free child ticket? I know DS 12 will need an adult ticket - is it possible to take the free child's ticket and upgrade it at guest services or would that not be allowed? I'm guessing it wouldn't go down too well but I don't want to miss out on a potential discount.

Thanks for any help.

No, you won't be able to upgrade that ticket. Most child's tickets can be upgraded but not these free tickets. The ticket must have a value in order to upgrade and the value is $0 for the free tickets. For a child ticket that you purchase, you can upgrade to an adult ticket for around $10 but not the free tickets.
