On a short trip to visit the Mouse, we were lucky enough to be first in line one day for Skipper's Canteen. The menu is much different that the Mouse's normal fare...and a welcome surprise! We were seated at what others gushed was the best table in the house...surrounded by mounted butterflies that our guide assured us she'd personally caught just last week. The jokes were typical Jungle Cruise fare...but the food was scrumptious!

We started with a bread service that was quite flavorful a coriander bread with a honey and fenugreek dip. Very good! We followed with the Arepas (ok, not sure of the spelling), as our appetizer and it was a delight of flavors (seasoned beef, black beans, plantains, corn pancakes). I had a rice noodle bowl with chicken and enjoyed it very much. My husband had the BBQ pork and also enjoyed it. The highlight of the meal was the kongaloosh (a chocolate lava type of cake, with an ice cream, frozen banana, chocolate crust, and coffee dust). It was the best dessert I've ever had on Disney property. My husband and I would go back for the dessert alone...but we'd go back for dinner too.

All in all, a fabulous experience.

Thanks for this! Looks like you really loved your meal. And what a great table you scored! Some good ideas for the rest of us to check out. A number of reviews on the Boards have been down on the food and I'm guessing this is partly because the menu is a challenge with kids in tow. Interesting to hear a dining perspective solely from adults. :-)

It definitely isn't the burger and chicken nugget fare you find everywhere else (thank goodness). We're looking forward to going back and trying the falafel, having the Arepas again, and then eating dessert. Best dessert I've ever had.

Our opinion is decidely in the middling-good camp. While we loved the cardamom-laced bread with the honey dip, if you're not a fan of those flavor profiles, you might wish for a simpler bread. While the baladi salad was fresh and crisp, the garlic-coriander dressing is bland and in severe need of acidity. A slight bump in the citrus content would do wonders. The standard bearer dish (the pork) was dry though tasty enough. Our other dishes were equally "just okay," though admittedly we didn't try any desserts. We'll go back, but it's not what we'd consider a must-do anymore. Kudos, however, for their attempt to try unique flavors--they just need to tweak the recipes a bit.

I can't wait to try this place! It's on my list. The Magic Kingdom really needs some new dining experiences!

It seems to be different food and that's also hard for me to convince a 70 something. She chose Morimoto Asia for her birthday meal because she loves the Chinese place Near her home. I do want to try it if I did an on my own evening or something like that.
