Those of you with dogs...PSA

Please pick up after them! You think leaving your dog poo behind is harmless? Today I did a visit with a visting nurse and we went to see a sweet 92 year old woman who slipped in dog poo and broke her hip. She not only hurt herself very badly, which was totally unecessary, but she also had to lay there on the sidewalk, then get transported by ambulance and to the hospital covered in poo. Her clothes and shoes got tossed in a bag, and stayed there and now that she is home they are all ruined with dried on dog poo.

The sad thing is the folks who will read this are probably the ones who are already picking up after their dogs. I attended a homeowners association meeting for my subdivision and put in a request for a pickup bag station in our common areas. It was approved. Guess what....still doggie doo in the areas, frequently within a foot or two of the baggie stations. I always pick up and carry extra baggies with me. Responsible dog owners do pick up. Sadly, not everyone is a responsible dog owner.

I hope that this elderly lady will recover. I'm sorry this happened to her. Her shoes and clothes are minor compared to her physical pain and loss of dignity from this. And it could all have been avoided.

Not nearly as extreme, but my DS, who is 8, slipped and fell in some yesterday. It was our neighbor's house, two houses down. They ALWAYS clean up after their dog, but someone else did not. Thank goodness my DS was fine, but I wasn't too thrilled about having to clean him up. I saw him fall, and if it had been someone older, I'm sure they would have been hurt.

Anytime I mow grass in my back yard, there is usually a pile I have to clean up, almost always the same spot. I don't have a dog so my yard is not fenced in on all sides, it is open through the driveway. I suspect it's a dog belonging across the street, I saw it running loose on the street this morning.

When I was really like 10 back in 97, I used to take my grandparent's dog on walks around the block and had no idea I was supposed to pick up after him. He just pooed in the back yard normally and he was the only dog my grandparents ever had while in the city so they didn't know any better either.

This is one of my top peeves. If you can't clean up after your pet, you should not own one. Not only is it gross for humans, I hate having to pull my leashed dogs away from poop piles on our walks.

It takes next to no time to pick it up and it's easy. Poop bags cost next to nothing and in some instances, are free. What possesses people to think it's okay to just leave it there?

It was so upsetting to see this woman, a very "young" 92, living independently, and now she is really not well. She may lose her independence. She was just so sad being cooped up at home, and unable to care for herself.

Thanks for listening. And to all of you who pick up your poo, thank you from all the little old ladies trying to get to the bus stop, so they dont have to "bother" their kids.

oh my, that is so sad. I always take extra with me on our walks and I have picked up after other owners who did not. I take my dog to the park and walk around the lake. I don't want people thinking is is my dog that left the mess so I will clean up if I see it.

Dog poo drives me crazy. Specifically, dog poo in my front yard. I have a big dog who is confined to the house and backyard only. He is never in the front yard. But I have a few "decorations" out there. Little ones. So maybe their owners think that if the poo is little it doesn't matter? It matters to me.

But the thing that really makes me nuts is my husband. He refuses to clean up after our dog. He'll cover it with leaves or kick it into a ditch. Does he think this stuff evaporates? Especially when the poo comes from a 73-lb. poodle? ARGH. Nothing I say or do makes a difference. So if MInky gets walked, *I* do it. I'd rather do it myself than have to face the neighbors.
