This may be a naive question but...

If someone were to want to purchase DVC points on the resale market and was OK in taking thier chances at booking 6 months prior to the trip away from thier home resort wouldn't it make sense to purchase the least expensive points regardless of the resort they were at? I.E. wouldn't it make sense to buy resale points at Vero Beach and use them at the other DVC places as long as you could live with the limitation on how early you could book your reservation?

You also need to take into consideration the maintenance fees. VB has the highest, so it isn't necessarily a good decision to buy there in order to stay at WDW.

But if you really don't care where you stay, you may want to look at one of the four on-site properties.

Keep in mind too that today the home resort booking window is from 11 to 7 months. That could change in the future.

It makes sense - if you are unable to plan more than 7 months ahead, your home resort doesn't matter. If you don't care where you stay, your home resort doesn't matter.

That said, VB may not be the least expensive buy in option - dues there are the highest of the DVC resorts and very likely to remain so. It wouldn't surprise me if they even rose at a faster clip than the others due to the higher cost of maintaining an oceanside resort in a hurricane prone area.

You might also keep in mind that your travel habits/planning ability may change over the course of your membership. My advice is to buy OKW if you think that may be the case. If you are able to plan more than 7 months in advance, at least you'll be on site. Can't say that for VB or HHI.

Best wishes-

Logically yes but mathmatically maybe not. VB and HH both have the highest dues in the DVC system. So in the long run, 36 to 48 years, you may find that after you pay all the dues and up front costs of say VB, it may actually cost more than SSR. If you are not worried about the 11 month window OKW would be the way to go.

Thanks for the quick replies. I had not taken into account the differences in fees.

The thought process is correct, since annual fees (at all DVC resorts) will far outweigh the original purchase cost - BUT the dues at HH are not the highest at all. They are actually third lowest again this year. Historically, dues have increased an average of about 4% per year - some years much more than that, some years they have even gone down. There is a cap of 15% per year unless the membership votes to allow a higher increase. To date, that much of an increase has never been approached.

For 2006, the dues at DVC resorts are:

SSR - $3.98

OKW - $4.24

HH - $4.34

BCV - $4.48

VWL - $4.61

BWV - $4.69

VB - $5.27 ( and $4.12 for those whose early purchase is still subsidized by DVD)

All of these figures may vary a little (either up or down) once the actual property tax figures are released by the county. The difference will be made up at the beginning of 2007.

I'd have to question the wisdom of a current purchase for one that couldn't plan at least 7 months out. However, if that were the case, I'd look at the cheapest overall, usually OKW. If it were I and I had a preference on where I stay, I'd still aim for that resort. One's situation may change or once one is shut out a few times, you might start planning better. I know a number who book several weeks and then cancel when they know which one they will be using.

Webmasterdoc...thanks for the correction.......I did not realize HH was that low.
