This Isn’t Turkey Part 4 Typhoon Lagoon and Rowan freaks out

If you have missed any days please see my Trip Report Index

Friday 23rd June 2006

Me, Sarah, 29 (turn 30 in Florida) – only adult planner
DH, Craig, 32 loves holidays, hates planning
DD, Holly, age 9 loves rides and hoping to try Kraken, loves planning
DD, Rowan, age 7 never been on any big rides, fearless (or so she says)

We were up and out for 9ish. Finding Typhoon Lagoon was easy. We are really enjoying driving now we are finding our way around. Mapman’s map is great! We had decided beforehand that we wouldn’t be setting up a base at any loungers/chairs and hired a large locker for $12. It was not very big but we do have enormous beach towels! We headed straight for one of the family raft rides, think it was Gangplank Falls. We queued about 30 mins for a ride that can’t have lasted more than 40 seconds. It was fun but way too short. The girls liked the waterfall effects and Holly was first to get soaked.

Next up was the kids slides beside the wave pool. The girls had great fun on these as there were hardly any queues and they went on each several times. Their attention finally focused on the regular screams from the wave pool and before long we found ourselves waiting with baited breath for the first one to hit. It was tremendous fun! After we picked ourselves up from the pool floor – did anyone else get some scrapes of the rough floor? – we soon got braver and headed into deeper water. We adopted the ‘Superman’ technique of standing back to the wave and jumping forward, arms straight out just as the wave hit. Fantastic! Sometimes we got the timing wrong – eek!

We headed over to Storm Slides next. While we were waiting I saw a mum with a small child, a boy who looked just under 2, at the top of a slide. The mum sat him down and he was pulled by the water away from her and went down the slide on his own, on his back, head first! I have the last picture of him stuck in my head, the water washing all over his face. He looked terrified. The mum just watched! I’m not sure if she meant to send him down on his own (hope someone was there to catch him) or whether she meant for them to go down together. Regardless, I would have dived straight down that slide if it was one of my kids! Not a nice thing to witness. We all managed to enjoy the slides. We had to take off our water shoes and hold them. I ended up with 6 as the girls gave me theirs too!
At the bottom there was no sign of the little boy or his mum, no sirens either so I guess he was OK.

I had some real fun after the Storm Slides as I got to sit down and watch everybody coming down Humunga Kowabunga. Craig took the girls up and I waited to see if they would all appear our of the slides or if any would chicken out. Holly and Rowan soon appeared and Craig in the next lot. They all agreed it was great fun. Both girls complained of humongous wedgies though! Heh heh!

We were getting hungry now so headed to the lockers and then for hot dogs and a giant pretzel. Very tasty. We also put on more suncream as it was hot, hot, hot.

Back to the slides. We all went on Mayday Falls and despite ample my ample padding this was very bumpy! We all enjoyed this ride but like most slides thought it was too short.

We then took the Lazy River round to Shark Reef. The snorkels taste 'minging' (of disinfectant so that’s kind of a good thing!), the masks were difficult to fit and some of the snorkels had been bitten too much ant were difficult to keep in your mouth. Rowan was a bit worried and I was too. When it came to our turn Craig and Holly went first and seemed to get off to a good start. The water was freezing cold even though I was expecting it. Rowan hated it and as we pushed off from the side she panicked. We had been told not to kick downwards and not to move backwards and I was trying not to do those things as Rowan flapped around in the water. I took off my snorkel gear and shouted to the lifeguard that we were not OK and she jumped in and saved us with her float! Oh dear. Roan was fine once she was out of the water. She said she had been scared by the cold water, the fish and the water leaking into her mask and mouth. Poor thing. Craig and Holly were waiting for us when we returned our gear and said that they had enjoyed it but did not see much.

Last thing for today was Crush n Gusher. We chose Coconuts and had about a 20 minute wait. Just as the person in front was about to go, the ride broke. We saw an employee walking through the ride obviously checking it over. After 5 mins the raft before us was off and before we had time to think about it Rowan and I were off too! Wow, it was amazing! I did feel the rollers at the bottom of the first drop and clenched more firmly but after that we just screamed and yelled the whole way down. Brilliant stuff.

That was it for slides today. We were starting to suffer from wearing watershoes all day. I took mine off walking back to the lockers but it was very hot on the ground. We showered, changed and headed back to the car.

Tonight we had an ADR for Whispering Canyon Café and headed off to Wilderness Lodge. This place is gorgeous; I would love to stay here. We were a bit early and headed to the pool are to have a drink. At 4.30 we went to sit and soak up the atmosphere in the lobby which was amazing. A huge fireplace and chimney and massive totem pole dominated the very large lobby.

Our reservation time was for 5pm, when the restaurant opened. We were at the podium about 4.50 and at 5pm on the dot one of the servers yelled, and I mean YELLED, ‘C-o-m-e a-n-d g-e-t iiiiiittttttttttttttttttttttttt! LOL that was funny.

We were shown to our table where we met our server, Half Pint. First thing she said was, ‘Can I get a Yee-hah?’ so we hollered yee-hah!! She then took our drinks order and threw handfuls of straws and napkins all over the table. She recommended the all-you-care-to-eat BBQ skillet but we had already decided on that anyway.

Mmmmmmm BBQ skillet

The food was delicious. We started with a salad and bread. Our sever noticed that Craig had finished his root beer and said she would get another. She came bag with an enormous 4 pint ‘glass’ LOL. The main skillet included ribs, corn on the cob, pulled pork, beans, coleslaw etc all of which were delicious.

Holly told Rowan to ask for ketchup which she did. Our server got everyone in the restaurant to ‘listen up’ and told them how there was a young lady eating BBQ and she wants KETCHUP!! It was so much fun to see Rowan end up with about a dozen bottles. We had really started something and it was not long before there were many shouts for ketchup.

The atmosphere was great. I really liked the way the servers ‘clip-clopped’ their tray stand around the room. At 6pm the girls joined in the Pony Ride around the room. All the adults were waving and twirling their napkins and shouting yee-hah. It was brilliant fun.

After so much BBQ Craig and I shared apple pie and ice cream. Holly had worms in dirt and Rowan vanilla ice cream. The total came to $100 inc tip. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

We decided to head into Downtown Disney for the first time. What a great place to chill for a while. The girls and I joined in a mini-disco which was a riot of fun. Craig watched from a safe distance pretending not to know us. The shops were very good and the girls were delighted to see the My Little Pony stand I had told them about. All you can fit in a box for $20 inc tax. Boy did we fit in a lot of stuff. Craig was very good at packing it all in!

We were back home for 8.30pm and while I did chores in the room, Craig took the girls to the pool. Later all 3 families met up for a chat and to compare notes.
One had left a note on the sofabed saying ‘please change bed’ and when they got back later that day there was a brand new sofabed. LOL – not quite what they meant!

11.30pm was lights out after another fab day.

Tomorrow – Chef Mickey’s and pink feet

You know how you said that you went to Fort Wilderness for the Whispering Canyon Cafe, well it's in Wilderness Lodge! :P lol Don't want to be mean but just in-case anyone wanted to book it and found out it wasn't in Fort Wilderness! Nice phone-call that would be! :rotfl:

Great trippie, I loved the "Change the bed" note that made me LOL! They take things so literally sometimes!

The 'change the bed' note really made me laugh. Have to admit the cold water and snorkel in Shark Reef would have freaked me out too.

Sara. :)

A lovely day, that food looks amazing! I think I would have freaked out in Shark Reef too, glad your daughter was OK afterwards.
