It's not an easy song to sing. 1 1/2 octave range, the low B-flat is tough for most sopranos (Carrie Underwood struggled with it), and the F is tough to reach in a pop chest voice. Plus some long phrasing - most pop singers breathe in awkward places to make it work ("Oh say does that star spangled, banner yet wave").

Personally I think that it takes operatic training to really do it justice; you need both lungs and range to nail it. My favorite rendition lately is by Kathleen Battle.

I think Whitney's version was incredible too. As far as Christina's version - I get the impression she was trying too hard and got caught up in elaborating on the song. Once she was lost it was over.

Whitney's rendition was one of those moments in television history that you will never forget. Even today, so many years later, it still brings tears to my eyes. There have been other really good performances of our National Anthem, but none like this one!
