Okay first shes 87 years old and has always been very very active. She still drives and goes strong. About a week ago her leg gave out all of a sudden. Its around her ankle and calf area. In this same leg she had a blood clot in 1948.....Anyway we took her to the emergency room and they ruled out blood clots and told her she had probably just pulled a muscle and to stay off of it. So is has gotten no better. She can barely walk on it. Last night we noticed blisters around the area. These are large clear blisters. We have an appt. for her at 10 but just asking if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks! Oh and some prayers and PD would be nice to if you have some to spare:)

UPDATE:: Its shingles! The problem was that the doctor at the E.R. last Monday night didn't diagnose it so it is too late to be treated easily. She has three prescriptions that we have to go get filled...the problem is the pain. It is extremly painful for her:( The good news is that it is not serious as in life thretening...I think in the back of my mind I was always afraid of another blood clot. They say that shingles are much worse on older people and she will just have to take it easy. Shes strong and has no health problems so hopefully she will handle it the best way possible. Thanks for the good thoughts everyone, I really appreciate it.

Beth,
No help - but I said a prayer.

Please keep us updated when you get back from the doctor's office.

No clue here, but glad to hear she is having it checked out. Best wishes to her!

No idea what it might be, but prayers for your grandmother, Beauty.

Let us know what the doctor says.

Poor thing!...Hope she feels better soon!...sending Pd and P...your way...

My first thought would be shingles. They can affect the nerve in the area where they break out, and may cause the weakness she had in the leg. If it is shingles, you need to get to a doctor asap, the sooner it is diagnosed, the better chance to do something for it. My Dad had them and waited to see a doctor, and didn't get the greatest results with the meds.

Hope she gets to feeling better......

My father in law is having sort of the same thing lately and he is around 80. He got these huge water like blisters on his legs, which eventually burst and were leaking fluid out. Apparently he had fluid in his lungs and the water was backing up in his body. The doctor gave him Lasix and has been wrapping his leg with gauze and the original ones are healed now. He also has other issues though, such as congestive heart failure, and he had pnemonia, which is causing other problems, but she may just need a water pill? But obviously I'm not a doctor. I hope everything turns out ok.

Sorry no real help here either, although I did think of shingles. But thought they hit the stomach area first?
Hope the doctor can help your Grandma feel better soon.:D

Hi Beauty,
It sounds like cellulitis, a common infection that results in red, swollen, painful areas on the lower leg(s). It is good that you are taking her back to the doctor, because if it is cellulitis she needs to get on some antibiotics right away. Best wishes, and let us know how she made out :)

Beauty-My Grandfather who is in his 70's just got over shigles a few months ago. It lasted a long time and was very painful for him. Especially on his scalp. He said those were the worst. It took a while but he is finally feeling better!

Hope your Grandmother feels better soon!

OMG, the ER did not correctly diagnose it. Sheesh. I know you can get that shot which lessens the shingles or something to that effect and they (ER) did not catch it. Scary and GRRRRR....
Well my dad had it, my grandpa & my grandma too. It lasted for many weeks & my grandma was in severe pain with it. I am glad you are there to take care of her.
I hope it isn't too bad for her.

Thanks everyone!

MM, yes the ER didn't diagnose it right and it was the first day. We were told that if they had the pain could have been reduced as well as the possible length....grrrr is right, but what can you do??

They gave her some pretty strong pain pills and she has rested all afternoon. I guess I'm thankful its in her leg where it is because it could have been in much worse places.

Thanks for the prayers and PD again!!

I'm sorry they didn't catch it in time for it to be easy. My aunt had shingles and she did say it was painful. :(

I'm sending more prayers and pixie dust for her. :)

I have heard that shingles are really awful as far as the pain goes. {{{{HUGS}}}} to your grandmother.

*HUGS* I hope it clears up soon. Chris had it a few years ago.

Thanks for the update, Beth.
I'll keep your Grandmother in my prayers.
Pam
