This has got to be the scariest sound...

war sounds are scary...

I was in Madrid (Spain) staying in a hotel downtown. ETA (a Basque separatist group) set off a car bomb 1 block from my hotel. The sound, the vibration - it woke me up early in the morning, and I'll never forget it. Looking out the hotel balcony, down the street, the car was in flames and a policeman who had sealed a perimeter from pedestrians lay dead in the street, killed by flying debris. A fellow officer was attending to him. That night it was difficult to close my eyes.

As a teacher, I think of the children in Iraq - the sounds and smells of war will create some very unpleasant memories. I only experienced 1 minor bomb - I can't imagine multiple, nightly barages. My heart goes out to the Iraqi people - I hope this whole thing ends soon.

During the 60's and early 70's, during the Vietnam War, they used to blow the air raid signal every Wednesday night at 7pm, I guess to make sure it worked and to make sure people knew the difference between that and a regular fire alarm.

It's very scary. I can't imagine what the people of Iraq are feeling right now. Some joy, some fear, some hope, some sorrow, some happiness, some sadness, some dread, some love, some hate. It must be awful.
