I've never really exercised that much and at 227 pounds it seems really hard to move! Is that silly? Can anyone with a considerable amount to lose advise me on how they began their exercise routine? Thanks for the advice!! :grouphug:

My biggest piece of advice is to start slowly but start doing something. I loved the Walk Away the Pounds videos when I started getting back into my routine and still have them in circulation.

I agree if this poster is talking about Leslie Sansone. I just finished doing her early videos (Miracle Mile). If you can walk, lift your leg a little bit, kick in place and to the side, you've got all her moves. She's very instruction friendly.

You should be able to find a site that would tell you how much you should weigh. Beware though b/c I'm only 5' and the weight it told me to be was 110. Well, I don't think that site was very realistic b/c I've had 3 kids back to back to back and there's no way I could get to 110.

Here's a link to finding your "ideal" weight. I got a good laugh for mine.

 Welcome to W.I.S.H.!
NO!! It is not a silly question!! You are absolutely at the right place for encouragement and support!! Look at some of these signatures and you will see people who have lost 5 to 135 pounds! If you are medically ok to exercise..then just get out and WALK. You said that you have never really exercised much..but walking is one of the best exercises. Hal Higdon says walk out your door and go 15 minutes, then turn around...that's 30 minutes of walking! You may need to do 5 minutes at first..just DO IT! I never would have believed that I would have over 1000 minutes of exercise for January. It just starts with one step. You've already taken the first step by coming here!! Good luck and keep posting!!

blue_eyes5212,
I have a considerable amount of weight to lose, over 200 lbs. I have started with the Biggest Loser Work out video, there are several levels and I really like it because there are real people doing it, not models!

That's how I started 2.5 years ago, at 296 pounds. Every morning I would get up at walk for 2 miles around my neighborhood, which worked out to about 40 minutes of exercise. It was a great workout, helped wake me up each morning, and didn't take any prep work - just get dressed and get out the door!

As my fitness improved, I walked faster, adding more distance to keep the 40-minute workout length. Eventually I even started running, which was absolutely amazing to me - I NEVER thought I would be a runner. And yet here I am, running each morning.

I really prefer walking/running outside, but if walking around your neighborhood isn't an option, I've heard good things about Leslie Sansone videos (WATP, etc.) as well, especially for beginners.

I also worked out at Curves 3x a week, which can also be a friendly workout for the beginner. The machines aren't too complicated, and you can pace yourself to get the best workout depending on your fitness level. When I started, I worked the machines hard, but only for 25 out of the normal 30 seconds - then barely moved on the recovery squares. I had to take it easy to keep my heart rate from getting too high. As my fitness improved (just like the walking), I was able to work the machines for the full 30 seconds, and march/walk on the squares.

I still work out at Curves, 2.5 years later - and it's still a great workout each time. :thumbsup2

Best of luck to you - YOU CAN DO IT! :teeth:
