If you are medically ok to exercise..then just get out and WALK. You said that you have never really exercised much..but walking is one of the best exercises.
That's how I started 2.5 years ago, at 296 pounds. Every morning I would get up at walk for 2 miles around my neighborhood, which worked out to about 40 minutes of exercise. It was a great workout, helped wake me up each morning, and didn't take any prep work - just get dressed and get out the door!
As my fitness improved, I walked faster, adding more distance to keep the 40-minute workout length. Eventually I even started running, which was absolutely amazing to me - I NEVER thought I would be a runner. And yet here I am, running each morning.
I really prefer walking/running outside, but if walking around your neighborhood isn't an option, I've heard good things about Leslie Sansone videos (WATP, etc.) as well, especially for beginners.
I also worked out at Curves 3x a week, which can also be a friendly workout for the beginner. The machines aren't too complicated, and you can pace yourself to get the best workout depending on your fitness level. When I started, I worked the machines hard, but only for 25 out of the normal 30 seconds - then barely moved on the recovery squares. I had to take it easy to keep my heart rate from getting too high. As my fitness improved (just like the walking), I was able to work the machines for the full 30 seconds, and march/walk on the squares.
I still work out at Curves, 2.5 years later - and it's still a great workout each time.
Best of luck to you - YOU CAN DO IT!
