I don't know your age or history but remember that thinning hair can also be caused by hormones/thyroid issues. Hopefully the vitamins help but if not, get that checked out.

I have what is called TE, telogen effluvium. Basically more shedding than growth. Randomly whenever my hair feel like it. This is the go to diagnosis when they don't know the issue. It is VERY frustrating. It started 7 years ago after a major surgery and a medication called Topamax. Hair loss is a side effect. Well, after titrating off that, the shedding didn't stop. For almost a year they said my hair would eventually grown back. Still waiting. I have a full head of hair, but quite literally 60% less than before. Now with the occasional "flare up", of hair shedding, we have discovered it's likely.... drum roll please HORMONES. I'm currently waiting on an appointment with an endocrinologist to do a full check of my thyroid, and ALL hormones as well as adrenal fatigue. My GP kept telling me I was stressed. Really? You think? I'm losing my $&)(-(/$:&;@;@ HAIR! Anywho- I'd strongly suggest you see a specialist. So far I have anemia, and severely low vit D and K. Im a celiac as well, and having an auto immune disease adds to the fun. Hair falling out is an indicator of something. Best to find out what's going on. Your age has little to with it.
I'm 44, and no one in my family in either side suffers from any kind of hair loss issues. Sooooo I'm kinda special. I take 1 GRAM of biotin daily, with zinc, slow fe for my anemia and prescription Vit D. My hair quality is great. I'd like more of it and less of it leaving

You have described my exact situation. My hair loss started 5 years ago and while it looks like I still have a headful of hair, it is considerably less than before. It sure doesn't seem like anything is growing back and it is depressing finding hair all over the floors.

My GP and OB tested for thyroid and both tests came back normal, that's why I'm a bit hesitant to go to the endocrinologist. Do you know if the endo's tests will be more detailed?

ETA - I've been taking biotin daily but it doesn't seem to be making any difference.

Low iron and low vitamin D can make your hair fall out.

Yes! I had low vitamin D and low B12 when I lived in Alaska (lack of sun, and I limit dairy due to digestion issues with it). Large doses of D and B12 shots fixed that. That was hair loss all over my head.

Now, unfortunately, I am losing hair mostly in front. My doctor couldn't see it, but I went to a dermatologist who confirmed it's the start of androgenic hair loss. He offered a Finasteride prescription, but I declined as I don't want to take too many oral medications as I get older. I take Biotin, use nizoral shampoo and use Rogaine daily. Been doing this for months and while the hair doesn't seem to be coming back, it also doesn't seem to be getting worse.

My hair has been thinning much faster since I had a miscarriage a few years ago. I had another child about a year ago and again my hormones were all over the place so my hair continued to fall out. Someone recommended Pura d'or shampoo and conditioner for hair loss. It is amazing. I never saw results with biotin but lots of people have commented on my hair since I started using the shampoo. I have been using it since August and can't imagine not using it. It's fairly inexpensive for the results it provides. I have been thrilled.

My "numbers" came back ok or borderline with my gp as well, but an endocrinologist with do a much more detailed test. And all other possible hormonal factors as well. Rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimotos and hypo/hyper thyroidism are all tests to be done when you have unexplained hair loss.

I use all Aveda products on my hair. Keep it about shoulder length or tad longer and had layers added for volume. My hair is very healthy, what there is of it. I'm just looking for why, and to make it stop cycling through the shedding. It is so depressing.

Low iron and low vitamin D can make your hair fall out.

100% fact. Having a D and Iron test for low levels is paramount to treatment. And while there is prescription level D, I take weekly, the very best way to achieve optimal D is 20 Minutes of direct sun daily, in the mornings is best and with forearm exposure. I could be better about it.

Mine is pretty healthy too. I have no answers for why yours is falling out or thinning I was just suggesting those products because they helped mine stop thinning.

I think it's a crap shoot honestly. Some products work for some and not others. Def a frustrating thing to deal with. Good to know you have found things that are working for you. At the present time, I'm just trying to keep what I have as healthy and shiny as possible.

Without telling the whole story......I had to be put on Beyaz for hormone therapy as well as a high iron vitamin coupled with an iron supplement. When I first started on it, I was shedding an unbelievable amount. So much so that when I got out of the shower and combed it would be thin clumps and once getting a hair cut they kept asking if I usually shed that much. Thankfully it eventually regulated and my hair is its usual self. Maybe have hormones checked?

I have appt with an endocrinologist coming up. I'm actually excited at the possibility of having answers!! Take all the blood you need

I can google it, but why do more men typically lose their hair and women don't?

It's a lifetime process in men whereby their testosterone goes through a conversion to dihydrotestoaterone. And usually happens when they are older, say 50's. And women just dont have as much testosterone.

Oh ok. Thanks for the info.

Nizoral shampoo has worked really well for me - I am a woman with PCOS and my free testosterone numbers are off the charts (so high they normally have to test it twice because they think they've made a mistake the first time). I've been using it for about 6 months now and my hair kind of looks a bit crazy because I've got all these shorts hairs sticking out all over, but it really has made a huge difference. I use a twice a week as my only shampoo.
