I've been trying to convince hubby that we should rent DVC for our trip this year, and basically had him agree that we'd try, and then our friends said they *might* want to join us. (Which I'd be ok with.)

How impossible would it be to get a grand villa at this time? We'd have 4 adults and 5 kids (8, 8, 6, 5, & 5 - all girls). I'd love the grand villa because then we adults could each get a room, then stuff the kids in a room too. ;)

I know they wouldn't be up for sharing a 2br villa, because one couple would end up sleeping in the living room. Anything smaller than that, and they'd probably want to just do the regular hotel rooms. The last time we went with them our 8 year olds were under 2, and we stayed in PopCentury.) We have the three kids, so we can't do any of the values.

(This was also posted on the For Rent page prior to me noticing the new rules for that page. Sorry!)

Summer is an easier time to rent DVC (than DVC peak times Oct-Jan marathon)

But you are less than 7 months out, so you may be limited to the resort’s with the most GV’s Kidani or SSR.
The other problem may be finding enough points to make a GV reservation.

For this year you may have a problem. Most owners book at 11 months out to guarantee availability.

You are less than 7 months out, the time when owners of any DVC resort can start reserving resorts other than the one they own. As noted, your best chance is likely going to be AKV Kidani or SSR and issue will be whether you can find someone with enough points to rent. In any event, understand that now that you are beyond the seven month window, you are no longer in a stage where you can spend a lot of time thinking about trying to rent a GV or having many discussions with others to reach a consensus. You need to move now to make the attempt to do a rental because waiting could mean no GV's will be left to rent. In considering the rental and possible alternatives, you should note that you can generally rent two 2BRs at a resort for less than the rental cost of a GV at the same resort.

As drusba has stated, two 2 bedroom villas are less points than 1 grand villa and there are a LOT more 2 bedroom villas than grand villas. You'll also find it easier to rent a pair of 2 bedroom villas because your broker can find you two separate owners to book them. I can't imagine there are many owners renting more than 600 points a year, which would be what you'd need for a grand villa, which could also be an issue now that you're under 7 months out.

I did check, and your dates are available for a grand villa at SSR (554 points standard view, 633 preferred view), AK Kidani (603 points standard view, 654 savanna view), and BWV Boardwalk view (675 points). For 2 bedrooms, there's availability at SSR (248 points standard, 303 preferred, 329 treehouse), OKW (269 points), AK Kidani (317 points), and GF (486 points), although it's unknown whether there are more than one of these available at each resort.

A GV could make the downtime of the trip a lot more fun because the adults can hang out together at night but make sure the other couple is well aware of the rental policy when renting points - specifically no refunds, no exchanges. They can't count on the much more customer friendly cancellation policy that booking with Disney direct has.

Also if I were you, I would make sure to get the money upfront from your friends or see if David's or where ever will let you put half the payment on each family's credit card so you aren't left holding the whole bag if they back out.

You'd need 554 to 675 points for that week. Finding an owner renting out that many points might be the hard part.
