Now I realize I should have paid more attention when there were talks about trading during the Members Cruise.

I really want to go to Trunk Bay, St. John Virgin Island as part of my 60th birthday celebration, and so I was thinking of a cruise out of Puerto Rico. Then I noticed that the Westin in St. John is part of Interval International, something that DVC members can trade into.

There are two time frames that I am considering, December '06 (early, not Christmas) or March '07, so I have some time to figure it out. Does anyone have any feedback?

Thanks,

First I'd say you have no time if this is what you want. The Westin will be tough though early December (first half) is likely workable. March would be very tough if not almost impossible through II. In any course, you should be looking at least a full year out. The post linked looks to be someone who effectively wants to rent out an II exchange. While it's done at times, it's against II's rules. And the intricacies of making it work are enormous in this situation. Besides the fact their deposit expires before your planned travel. You should likely find a Starwood member and trade with them directly. Post on TUG and on the rent trade board of DIS. But putting in a DVC request first has little risk. At most you're risking $75 and in most cases, there would be no risk other than success or failure. Be aware that any match would likely be inside 6 months out making your other planning difficult.

Thank you Dean, and spiceycat. I will give this more thought. My preference is December '06, for a land vacation, and March '07 if it's to be the Southern Caribbean cruise.

I didn't realize that a year ahead is the time to be making the definite plans for an exchange. So, I have about a month to make up my mind.

I would assume the cruise is booking already or very soon for that time. I'd reserve it to give you backup as you can cancel up to 60 days out for a full refund if it's a TA cash reservation. And go ahead and put in the request with DVC as soon as you think you know what you want, you can always modify or cancel your request later. Actually some trades should be requested closer to 2 years out, it just depends on when the members at those resorts can deposit. Most are 12 months but some are 18 & 24. Plus even though most Marriott's are technically 12 months out, II frequently lets the members deposit 13 months out if they have a reservation.
