Thinking of getting rid of my home land-line phone

Every month I pay our home land-line phone bill, I wonder if I really need it. Everyone in my family has a cell, so we can all get in touch with each other. I've been keeping track, and the only calls we get one house phone are from doctor offices and telemarketers. Anyways, my question is this.....Disney has my home number on our account. Should I leave that the way it is until our trip next June? I definitely don't want to mess anything up on my ressie! :thumbsup2

you can cut your landline bill down to something like $12/mo. No caller ID, no long distance, just a basic local calling only line. For peace of mind it's not much to pay. With all the add-ons it's something like $40+. We have AT&T and that's what I did back in Feb. My cell phone does not work good in the house, it's a hassle in the middle of winter, stepping outside to make a phone call.

ETA: They did not want to do this at all. I told them this was their choice, either they keep me as a customer at the lower service that I wanted or I discontinued service. Their choice, you want my $12 or $0. They did give me a hard time about it but that $0 is a hard pill to swallow I guess.

I've had only my cell for several years now. I love it that way and it saves me money every month - but my cell works in my entire house so that is not an issue.

I would not worry about Disney - call them and give them your cell number. If you disconnect your land line you can pay to have the phone company say this number has been changes to X - and have them give out your cell.

I am seriously thinking about this as well. ::yes::

I will say the only time I use the land line is for 1-800's I may call OR to use the speakerphone. I am new to CA and all my family in the East will call that #, I put the call on speakerphone and everyone can hear and join in. My cell's speakerphone is too soft. :headache:

I have COX. I will say my bill is running about $25.00 a month.

As far as Disney, call them and UPDATE them with your cell as your primary #!

I did this last year and it has been so nice not getting those annoying telemarketer calls every night. I am going to get the majic jack so the kids can use it to talk to their friends. Otherwise, we use the cells.

We lived 4+ years without a landline and never missed it.

We then moved to our first house and there literally is no cell service. Not a bar.

We checked Verizon and they had some crazy prices. We ended up going with cable's tripleplay and got their phone with the net and HDTV. Was cheaper then verizon and works just fine.

Plus has tons of features (love that we can have home phone forward to both mine and wife cell) and such.

Rather just deal with cell phones, but there was no chance of us getting service and my kids are getting older and will need a phone for after school to check in and god forbid we need 911

We got rid of our landline years ago. I've only missed it twice. I needed to send/receive a fax.

What is Majic Jack? :confused3

I didn't have a landline for about 1.5-2 years. Due do DD losing her cell, or geting it taken away at school, or being grounded from it, I decided that I needed the peace of mind that there will always be a phone available to her. If it weren't for that though I would still NOT have a landline.

We went to only cell phones a year or so ago when our daughter got a family plan & let me & her dad in on it.

Our main reason for going in with her was it was silly for me to pay for my cell phone as well as landline at home. I hated paying the extra money.

Now, however, I wonder if I made an error because this stupid phone keeps cutting me off, makes it hard to understand the caller & visa versa or keeps me from even "dialing" someone else. I absolutely hate this phone!!

Now I'm understanding it could be the house. So what's with that?? I'm in the stupid city for petes sake! There's enough darn cell towers around the silly phone should work, right??? Even outside on the deck it's iffy to make or receive calls or understand the caller & visa versa. I'm waiting for cold weather to see if the leaves on the trees being down will make a difference. If not I don't know what to do.

To answer your question, OP, I wouldn't worry about changing your phone number with Disney now with your trip so far away. Shouldn't have a problem I would think.

Cell phones don't work very well in big emergencies, like after 9-11 or hurricanes. Or even big storms that knock out your electricity....soon the cell phones die, and you're completely cut off. We had that happen in Florida after all the hurricanes.

We keep our landline.

Our landline was dead after some hurricanes. It was useless for a while after Wilma; so were our cell phones. Cell phone service was restored before our regular phone service. The interesting thing is that only one neighbor on our block had a working landline. :confused3 The corded phone that I have for emergencies was of no use.

I have been thinking about getting rid of our landline as well. I'm sick of paying $60 every month. We don't have long distance or fancy plans. I use my cell phone when I need to make long distance calls. My mom is about an hour away and that's considered local long distance. I have to pay $.25 for every call to her. That used to be included in my plan, but not anymore. Since cell phones have become so popular and many people have dropped their regular phone service, I guess these companies have to do something to continue to bring in revenue.

I cut my off a while back. The only people that called it were strangers.

We got rid of our landline almost 2 years ago. We are seldom home to use it; it was costly; and I was tired of having to look at caller ID to screen calls.

We just got rid of our landline and got Magic Jack. Works great and at $20 a year vs $45/month, I couldn't ask for more. It works through the usb connection on your computer. If the computer is off, the phone goes to voicemail(ours is only off when we aren't home so no big deal). We were able to register our address so if we need 911, our address is connected to the phone number.

Several years ago when we returned from vacation our land line had been taken out by lightning. Since we never used it anyway I kept forgetting to call to have it repaired. That made me realize we didn't need it so I had it turned off and we have only used our cells since.
