Anytime there is a natural disaster scammers try to take advantage of our generosity to line their own pockets. So if you wish to donate to Japanese or New Zealand disaster relief the first basic rule is to NEVER donate to a cold call soliciting donations. Initiate the donation yourself. Websites like Clark Howard's have links to help you verify that an organization you want to donate to is legitimate, or you can check yourself. But the bottom line is make sure the money is going where you think it is before you give.
