Thinking of cashing out

I've thoroughly enjoyed my DVC membership and my SSR home, but I think the time has come to sell. WDW isn't as much fun for me as it was when I bought in. I haven't visited since 2013 (banked and borrowed to use three years worth for a dream trip to Aulani) and have no plans to do so this year. That was once unthinkable. It's definitely bittersweet but when I found myself thinking, "Oh crap, I have to plan a trip to Dis to use my points," I knew it was time. I'm sure I'll return to WDW in the future, but it's just not my go-to vacation anymore. :(

Would you have a reason to go in the future? Maybe grandkids someday? If so, then maybe rent your points for a few years? Otherwise, feeling dread for planning a Disney trip would definitely be a reason for me to want to sell. There are plenty of people out there who will be happy to buy your DVC from you.

I'm one of those semi-rare single owners, so probably not. But you're right, the resale market seems solid right now so I might as well jump while it is.

Have you considered HHI or Vero? - Both seem like great resorts and might be a way to still use your membership. Most people who have visited HHI love it. If you know you are definitely not going to use it then selling would be the right choice, but i would certainly try those other resorts (use up some points) and then sell.

Every time I start thinking about "cashing out", WDW starts adding something new and exciting - at least to me. I am really looking forward to Pandora, ROL, Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land as well as the Moonlight Magic events. (Our next trip coincides with one of the events for EPCOT). So for now, no more thoughts of selling. :)

That said, we are cutting down the frequency of our WDW trips. There are some other places I want to visit while we're still healthy enough to travel. The "bright side" of that, is that our WDW trips will be a few nights longer, and availability permitting, we'll try out some of the other resorts that haven't been options because they are more expensive than our beloved BWV.

Mokat76 - good luck whatever you decide to do.

Luckily, cashing out DVC now doesn't mean you have to give WDW up forever! Maybe instead of the once a year visitor you become the once every five years visitor. If so, cashing out is smart i think. YOu can always pay cash for a room, rent points, or stay offsite.

I'm assuming you haven't used this years points (and maybe have some banked points) which should help your contract sell pretty fast. Good luck!

We are mostly through with WDW but still enjoying Aulani and Grand Cal. However, we have too many DVC points for our current HI/CA needs and I'm considering renting the points through a broker for a couple years and/or using the points through RCI during the "no fee" exchange period before we turn to selling one or more contracts. Can't hurt to try ...?

I understand what you are saying. When we bought in we went a few times a year for quite a few years. Even started combing WDW with a carnival cruise to break it up. After that last trip we decided we need a break for it to feel fresh. We rented our points out and used that money for a DCL
cruise. Last 2 summers we have been exploring Europe. This summer we are going to Disneyland and Aulani for our dream trip. We are in borrowing mode.
Funny thing is that they are doing so many changes to WDW that now I can't wait to go again. We won't be going again till June 2018 for my DD sweet 16 bringing 3 friends. But I am really excited about it and that in itself is exciting.

If you are sure.....Sell no doubt.....if any hesitation...rent your points and revisit in a year or so. I think market will stay strong.
Good luck
Kerri

Not a bad idea...Ive owned since 97 and we are thinking the same thing....my kids are even saying that we go to much and that its not the same...very upsetting

We have at least 2 trips planned between now and June 2018. At that point I think we'll take a break and rent our points out for travel to Europe (eyeing a Viking or similar cruise) and maybe Australia. By the time we come back, Star Wars and many of the new features will be up and running (even allowing for Disney's construction track record). I agree with Disney Regulars, planning a Disney vacation should not invoke dread, but perhaps you just need a time out to date around. :-) Good luck.

We got lucky and found a 90 point contract on resale for $66pp. It actually had 55 banked points and as soon as it hit the timeshare stores sell page I made an offer and we bought it in late 2012.

It looks like I could probably strip all the points out of it and sell for $80pp but that doesnt seem to make much sense as I just sold 113 points for $1600 which easily covered dues, plus, the wife and I realy love food & wine!

Awwww Sis lets go one more time on the DVC cruise in 18. 2017 already sold out. It will go on sale sometime this fall. Lots of swag and and it was On the fantasy and a 7 day to the eastern carribean. Or come with3 of us to the Poly the first week of December. We doing 4 nights there and 3 at SSR. Or aulani/maui would be nice. If i could drag myself away from aulani. I really loved it there.

I'm always interested in reading these posts as I frequently reach the precipice and then back up. Marriage broke up a few years ago, lkids are grown up and working on their careers (not working on grandchildren yet), some of the changes in the past year have bothered me. There don't seem to be any low crowd times any more, so I talk about selling and pumping up my retirement savings a bit. Then I think, just one more trip to the food and wine festival, and I have yet to experience Christmas at WDW. Something always stops me from sellling. At least I don't have addonitis any more.

that was my fear i can see my 12 year old starting to lose the magic but then we went and had a new baby so he is about to go on his first trip soon so i extended the kid thing for a least 10 years! ha what i do for a disney trip....i am kidding but i can see it in my older kid.....

We finished up the "kid phase" of our trips about 8 years ago and enjoyed many trips with just DH and me. Now, we have grandkids and just added on another 150 points so that we can better accommodate everyone. For us, having done DVC for many years now, we can see that the need for points waxes and wanes. i know that before we were to sell our points, we would rent them for a few years just to make sure we wouldn't be making a mistake.

I wondered if this could ever happen to us back in 1997 when we first purchased. These days Disney without family, guests, or friends is just as much fun as when we invite them along. Disney can be a lot of fun for couples, and older enthusiasts.

We got out in '15 after 12 years. We started going on annual cruises now, and the boys, 11 and 16, love it. We're doing a short, 3 day Disney Park/
RCCL cruise next week and yesterday my 11 y.o. says to me, " I still think I like cruises better than Disney":( We'll see. We don't miss dues right after Christmas. We did have some great extended vacations at the world.

DVC isn't a life long commitment but most people think that it is. Plus, humans have a hard time letting go, that's why there are more storage units than affordable housing in my town. Sell, take a break, rent a reservation if needed in the future or buy again.

We have sold several contracts and bought a few as we adjust our portfolio of DVC properties.

DVC is a discounted room and maybe some perks, nothing more.

I am like you a single owner. While I have not completely cashed out... my point holding is now less than half what it was a few years ago. I still go for Food and Wine so I kept some points for that, but the rest of them went to new homes.

I know the "rent" chant will show up, but for me I didn't buy the points to run a small business LOL! And using the points at HHI or Vero makes no sense to me. I can find great beach locations that cost less then the dues. (Heck I go to Hilton Head in September and stay beachfront for less then the dues would be for the required points for the same stay at DVC!)

I agree that a lot of the magic is gone. I keep thinking it will come back, but under current management I actually doubt it will happen anytime soon!

We have been members since 97 and at times think about cashing out but I think we still have some more things to do. Did the Panama Canal last year using points from a few years that that was wonderful. If anything it forces us to plan something. Otherwise the time passes and without it we probably wouldn't do as much so it's still a good incentive for us. Have done Disney many times with and now without kids, ABD a few times and several cruises. Still want to do Aulani. When we signed up although it seemed like a lot at the time it sure has gone up. Can't imagine doing it now.
