Thinking about switching from Amtrak to Jetblue

I've taken the train about 4 times from NJ to Orlando. I love the train. I had a sleeper so it was a nice peaceful trip. Connections always worry me, but I'd check how on-time it is currently and decide. What happens if you miss it? Does Amtrak give you options at that point?

Hey Mickey_Lynne...where in Maine are ya? I'm near Farmington. We're flying AirTran out of Portland non-stop in August with one stop in Baltimore on the way home. I'm so excited not to drive to Portsmouth, Boston or Manchester! We used to live in Southern Maine (Sanford and N. Berwick) so Boston was easy...now it's a 4 hour drive. While I love train travel, I'm not interested in 30 hours on a train. Did Amtrak charge you a big cancellation fee?

I'm in Waterville. Portland Jetport was closer but there were no direct flights out with Jetblue on our departure day. At least for our first flight I'd like to go nonstop. On the way back we stop once in NY. Since our flight leaves at 6:30 am we're going to take off at midnight and just get there early. My DH will do the driving while probably the rest of us are sleeping. Amtrak is charging us a $100 cancellation fee. That is ok cause we're still ahead $40 by changing from train to plane even with paying the fee. Plus now we don't have to pay $140+ that Happy Limo quoted us for picking us up at Kissimmee Station. Yeah!!! :cool1: We'll be picked up with ME for free now! :thumbsup2

Another Mainer (by birth at least) checking in on the conversation. Born in Biddeford, raised in the Kennebunks, so we know the Wells station well. Heck, the drive to Logan is only another hour and a half after Wells, and no North to South Station transfer sounds like a better plan.

Be sure you realize that parking at Logan for a 10 day trip will run you big bucks unless you are careful. It may pay to do an airport hotel overnight on the way down, and they'll shuttle you back and forth to Logan, and the hotel cost will be cheaper than parking in Logan Central parking lot ($22 for the first day, $11 a day afterwards, or $121 for a 10 day trip) or the Logan Economy Lot ($16 a day, $96 weekly, possibly $144 for a 10 day trip) or Park-n-Fly ($123 for a 10 day trip). Another option might be driving as far as Peabody Mass (off I95) and pulling in to Logan Express, which will run you $99 for a 10 day trip. Perhaps just a expensive would be a Limo service from your home in Waterville direct to Logan, if you can count on them to be there for your return.

Good luck!

You could also just go to C&J Trailways in Portsmouth,N.H. You can leave your car there for FREE and the fare is $39 round trip to Logan and back and kids are free. We do this out of Newburyport,Ma and it works out so well. We also flew Jetblue last year and we really liked them. I too am very afraid of flying and the T.V's help a lot to distract you. Have fun.

Just wanted to add you would have to get the bus at 3:00a.m but that sure beats paying a fortune to pay to park at Logan. Maybe you could get a hotel room in portsmouth for the night before and you would still end up paying less than parking at Logan. Good luck and have fun whatever you decide.

You're probably thinking I'm kidding but I promise I am not.

You could give me the whole vacation for free and I wouldn't make that train ride. Trains were the only civilized way to travel when horseback was the only other option.

Take the medication and a nap and you'll be in FL before you know it.

Enjoy your trip.

OOOOOOOHHH if you ever do get a whole vacation free on the train...may I have it?????? I love the rocking motion of the train sooo much I get warm & fuzzy just thinking about it. (You're trip includes a sleeper car doesn't it?):rotfl2:

Shoot, I was going to ask but you beat me to it.

FLY!!!!! We took the train from DC to Kissimee one year. It was a once in a life experience. ;) I won't to it again!;)

So.... fly down in just a few hours, save yourself money on transfers by using magical express, and have a good trip!!:)
