We want to visit Savannah while at HH, what are must sees?? Where to eat?? Thanks soo much!!

To offer a differing opinion, I would recommend VISITING Lady and Sons, but skipping the meal. We have eaten there twice and probably won't go back. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but it is neither excellent nor particularly memorable. Plus, unless your there on one of the very limited days that they take reservations, it is a long wait and takes a lot of planning to eat there. Go by and see it, but try some of the other excellent places along the river or in some of the old mansions elsewhere in Savannah. My advice would be to make sure that you walk around or take a carriage ride so that you can really appreciate the slower pace and the subtle beauty of the place. If you haven't read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil I would recommend it as an interesting way to learn some things about modern Savannah. In addition, a trip to the Juliette Lowe home is a must. What a beautiful home and a nice tribute to the founder of the Girl Scouts.

What better thing to see but ME! (Ok that's something to miss)

Gonna try this again as the system messed up and lost my list.

For Food....Lady and Sons at least once. Vinnie Van GoGos (Pizza...cash only!)
If you go to Tybee Island (a better beach than Hilton Head) go to the North Beach Grill across the Street from the Light House. Best food around. Tell them Walter Sent you.

Other places to go.

Owen Thomas House, Davenport House. Heck...just take a Trolley Tour.

Chippewa Square..Forrest Gump's square.

Boneventure Cemetary

Ft Pulaski

Take the free boat ride across the river to the Weston and then back....its fun for free.

River St. Sweets for some PrAlines. It's a LONG A...like in prayer.

Go to the Bull st. Library if you need internet services. Its free for using. Don't go after 12:00 noon because it gets REAL busy then.

More questions? Send me a note.

We really enjoyed the Ghost Walk...it's kinda cheesy, but fun. The one we went on was "Ghost Walk, Ghost Talk", they keep their group size smaller than some of the others, so you can actually hear the guide, and they go into the Juliet Lowe house, which I don't think other tours do.

Eat at the Boar's Head of River Street - the food is really good and not too expensive. The atmosphere is great, too - a 1780's cotton warehouse with the original floors, walls and ceiling beams and the door has a porthole. The bar looks very interesting. Wait staff was great and they had white table cloths and real napkins and bread served in a silver basket. You can also see into the kitchen. If you have kids, there's also a funny toy store across the alley.

Forsyth Park to see the BIG fountain. I went last week on a visit to my FIL, but I was glad I did not take my purse into the park with me. Several homeless people seemed to watch us. There was a wedding about to take place by the fountain when we were there.

Saltwater Grill - go all the way down Eisenhower and through a neighborhood and take a right. Very scenic view of the tidal waters and marsh out of huge windows and the food is good.

I've never eaten there, but many people will send you to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House (I think that's the name) for lunch. I've heard it's as good as Lady & Sons and often as long of a wait. I've only been to Savannah once and chose Lady & Sons, but really want to try this one the next time I'm there.

I'm interested in trying Mrs Wilkes also. Lady and Son's was good, plain southern food - very filling and plenty of it. We were fortunate to be there on a drizzly day and didn't have a long wait.

The pralines on River Street - excellent! They make them fresh and hand out generous samples. If only I could have stopped with just a sample....

We took the Pirate's tour, which takes you through a few streets and parks and points out historic and haunted houses, ending after a visit in a restaurant, where potential seamen would be captured and taken to sea through a tunnel......the name escapes me now. This was a fun tour, with our own personal pirate in costume (complete with sword and pointy hat) leading us through the city. Our group of four were all that booked for our timeframe. I would recommend it as a nice little morning interlude.

We saw just enough to make us want to go back again as a side trip while staying at Hilton Head.

Salt Water Grill!!!!!!!!!! Oh yes! Worth the trip. I take my wife there when she wants to eat Crab Legs. It is a sight to behold!

Mrs Wilkes is lots of fun and you get to eat with total strangers. :cool1:

As a side note to the Lady & Sons....you may want to check out to see if Paula will be doing one of her cooking schools while you are there. Also Paula's brother has a restaurant called Uncle Bubba's Oyster house, this might be another good alternative.

Take one of the guided tours - very interesting and not very $. Walk around the various squares (of which there are many). If you've read The Book (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - excellent!!), you will find countless references and tours. I did not know that Savannah has a huge St. Patrick's Day celebration; it would be an adventure to be there then! :woohoo: The Savannah River area is interesting, too. It's a lovely city and highly recommended!

The Parade is Great! The aftereffects are only for the stout hearted. We are talking drunk people, wild parties and many fights.

We leave town if we can, usually to the beach.

We spent a Fri/Sat in Savannah (thanks to Priceline) between a Sun/Thurs stay at OKW and one at HH. Talk about a laid back vacation! We enjoyed the Trolley Tour where you can hop on and off wherever you like. It is definitely a walking city, but it was very HOT while we were there, so we were happy not to be walking the whole time. We were fortunate to eat at Lady and Sons and really enjoyed it. We also ate along the river in a restaurant that I believe was a converted cotton warehouse. It was quite good as well.

I hope to go back again now that I have seen Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil. (I know I should have read it, but with Netflix, what the heck  )

Thanks for all the suggestions. My DH is a big praline fan so I'll definately be buying those!!

Aye Matey! Different Owners but the same place and recipes. Capt'n Flint still haunts the place.

You know, I have never eaten in the pirates house. I have been in it, but, never eaten. This is NOT a knock on them. I hope to correct this soon.

My dad & stepmom visited Savannah recently and ate at both Lady & Sons and Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. The had good things to say about Lady & Sons and GREAT things to say about Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House.
