I had to laugh at your castle photos as that’s been pretty much my kids for years until the last 5 or 6 when I can’t even get 1 son to MK and the other won’t stop for photos at all
MK looks hot! Shame that genie + wasn’t giving you great options. That thing is pricey for a family of 4 so I’m sure you weren’t best pleased.
Evie looks very cute in her England ears.
I think you made the right call and I’m glad you got to see some characters on your way out.

Ugh the Florida heat! It can get you! And I will see I don’t mind staying offsite but the driving to MK alone makes it not really worth it for me! August and in 2 weeks we are offsite and just thinking about that drive and walk blah! At least it should be cooler this time!

Unfortunately, it does not pay to be a driver when visiting this particular theme park. We had to park at the TTC, walk over to the center, and hop on board a ferry just to get to the tapstiles.

True... as you pass the parking booths and enter the parking lots, you have that feeling of "we're finally here!" 45 minutes later you finally walk under the train station.

Could Evie look any more bored by the assignment? This girl hates posing in front of the castle. I tell you, she makes Walt Disney World look so underwhelming.

Hey, at least she's facing the camera! That's better than we get from DD when she doesn't want to take a picture.

I really hoped for the husband’s sake, their visit to the Magic Kingdom picked up. It also made me think about how absolutely confusing and baffling the parks must seem to newcomers. The hoops you have to jump through just to navigate a single theme park. I’ve been trying to talk to my mom, who hasn’t been since pre-Covid and sometimes she just says, “Stop,” because it gets too confusing for her.

100% True! I'm glad that DW and I got our little 2 day trial run to try things out because I feel like I'm in the upper percentile of people who know and follow what's going on in the parks and I was way overwhelmed planning things out. They've sucked a lot of the fun and relaxation out of a trip.

But they took away parking fees at the resorts, so there’s a start, right??

My mom saw that on the news and she was all excited that we won't have to pay for parking. I was like, yeah, that's great. It almost makes up for these 50 other extra charges they've added or this other hurdle we have to jump through, etc. etc. Nice olive branch and I don't want to sound unappreciative of the little break there, but it's like I see you Disney. You're not fooling me.

For those of you who do not know, Evie has loved the carousel since she was a tiny little toddler, and no trip is complete without a ride on it. Evie chooses her horse very carefully, and she has to pay attention to all the details on the one she picks.

We can't enter Fantasyland through the castle unless we have time to ride the carousel. If we're in a hurry to get to a ride and get in line, I'm going the long way to avoid that area.

As soon as we got off the attraction, Alex checked the app to see what was available.


Nothing.

Wow... That really stinks. Pay for a service and get stuck with... that. I'm kind of surprised though, when we were there on NYE, touringplans had it at a 10 crowd level and we were still able to get LL to work our way around the park from Adventureland to Tomorrowland. We did skip a few things, but we did mostly what we wanted. I think our only backtracking was from Small World to HM.

Philarmagic.

Yes, dear friends, it was ten thirty in the morning on a Magic Kingdom day, and we were using our pricey Genie Plus ticket for Philarmagic.


Did you cringe? Did I make your eye twitch?

Well, they do promise you 2-3 attractions with it. I guess you got your money's worth.

Alex and I justified it by telling ourselves we wanted to see the new Coco addition.

And, for what it was worth, the kids LOVED the show.

That's something! I do enjoy that show, but yeah... definitely not a priority LL.

Leaving the shop, I called it. I told Alex I was ready to head out of the park. Florida won.

Rough morning... Crowds and heat can really take a toll fast!

Do you know if we book separately if we can put in a request to be seated near each other? I can't imagine it'll be an issue.

Sure, they took away the $20ish per family per day fee, but that pesky $20 per person per day is still there and the service still stinks! Darn G+!! It really is too complicated for the average family to visit WDW these days.

Aw, what a bummer! This is the trip you're staying at the Swan right? The one where you're getting a pseudo-kids free trip?

Yes, that is the one. I am getting more excited as we get closer.

I have so many goofy/annoyed kid/husband pictures. I see a photo pass photographer and we have to stop for a picture. I saw one outside of AK once and stopped. he was just trying to fix his camera but he took pictures anyways. It worked for both of us. He got to test his camera and I have pictures from a spot that you normally wouldn't get pictures. They are learning to just deal with it.

Don't let DH's half smile full you here. This was entering the parks in the afternoon and no one was happy that I made then stop before dinner. Looking for this picture reminded me that I have not been in the parks since 2016. I didn't realize it had been that long. We did a Disney cruise in 2018 and planned a trip with my mom for 2020 that sadly got canceled. So much has changed since then.

I like the cavalcade, because it's like a parade but you don't have to wait around for it. Best of both worlds.

You definitely have to add an hour onto your travel time to get to the MK when offsite! But! For the space you get in an offsite location, it can be worth it.

You have to add an hour of travel time each way when driving to the MK. And with kids, that eats into a lot of their patience.

Getting a trial run was definitely good for you. Now you won't be trying to figure out the app with three kids antsy to get going.

Hopefully so. And from what I remember of the party, it's pretty casual, with a lot of people moving around going to/from the buffet.

The buses to the MK are an onsite perk that you really have to consider when booking a place to stay.
Honestly, that's my biggest gripe with Shades of Green. The buses drop you off at the TTC, so usually we end up walking over to the Polynesian and monorailing to the park. But even that can become tiresome with kids.

That makes it worth it. The AC helps too.

I feel like I prioritize attractions in the summer based on how good their A/C is.

When I first looked at your MK pictures what I saw was the beautiful blue sky. I guess a cloudless sky isn't great when it's hot. I think castle picture #1 is good! #2 not so much But your DD looks thrilled to be on the carousel - win! Love the sword/stone tradition too. We love Philharmagic but agree not a great use of Genie+. We were there a year ago with a group of 7 and purchased Genie. It was kind of a mess and did not feel we got our money's worth....Wonder if you headed back to MK in the evening??

OMG! so much has changed. We missed the opening of the Frozen ride by a week on our last trip. I think I am prepared. I have done a lot of reading on the boards.

DH and I did a ton of planning this weekend. DH and DD have been asking what was wrong with me because I was not doing any planning. After this weekend I think then are annoyed with me. This morning was the day to book dining and we had to have a plan. We are doing Rose and Crown fireworks dinner, Big River Grille, Shula's and with the kids we are doing Beaches and Cream. All went well but wished for an earlier time for Beaches and Cream. I wanted Hoop Dee Doo Revue but it just didn't work in the ours or the kids schedule. DS doesn't want to leave his friends for long and it is just so out of the way to make it work.

I could see how traveling to and from Hoop Dee Doo would take awhile. And kids might miss something among their friends if they're gone too long. I am starting to get little previews of this next stage of parenthood, and I'm not sure I'm ready for it. The other night, Evie had basketball practice and Landon spotted one of his friends and asked to go hang out with her. I let him, but then at one point I needed to talk to him about something so I hunted him down and asked him to come sit with me for a second. He acted like I'd just told him to clean the baseboards with a toothbrush! I can only imagine what being at a theme park would do...

July 13th Part 2:



Leaving the Magic Kingdom, Alex and I guided the kids onto the monorail. We had a lunch to get to!

And, fortunately, it was located at the Contemporary Resort.






Steakhouse 71 had only been open 9 months at the time of our trip, but Alex and I had heard nothing but great reviews for the restaurant. There were several items on the menu that sounded interesting to me, and I was dying to see the décor inside.






The kids got a kick out of looking at the photographs on the wall and giggling at what Mickey used to look like.


“Were you there for the opening of Magic Kingdom, Mom?”



Ouch, kids really know just the thing to say to keep you humble.

“Geez, kids, I’m not THAT old.”

“But you were alive for Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom’s opening.”

…....

“That wasn’t that long ago, kids!”


“You didn’t even have cell phones back then. Yeah, it was.”



As much as I was LOVING this conversation, a hostess came and seated us at a table shortly after checking in at the podium.


The four of us decided to order a hodgepodge of items and share them amongst ourselves.


We got the Bacon and Eggs:



I found it to be all right, but probably not something I’d order on my own again. Alex, however, loved it, especially the cheesy grits.



Onion Rings:



This was the favorite of the kids. They were fighting for the last few pieces. I really enjoyed the sauce that came with them. It had a little kick to it, which I was surprised by. Normally, Disney keeps their dishes on the tamer side. It reminded me a little of a blooming onion at Outback.



Both kids got the Peanut Butter wings with broccoli and grapes:




And Evie was not a fan! Oh my goodness, she passionately disliked these wings. Alex and I were shocked at how vehemently she stood her ground.

“I am not eating any more of these. Peanut butter on chicken is weird!”

Fortunately, she’s not a big eater on the best of days, so the broccoli and grapes and bites from the other dishes were enough to fill her.

I tried a bite, and I can’t say I blame her. It was like they heated peanut butter, let it get melty and gooey, and rubbed that over the chicken.

It was a….unique flavor combination.



I ordered the Ceasar salad, which was on the appetizer list, but I got as my main:



I thought it was really good. The lettuce was fresh, the dish presented beautifully, and the dressing had a strong black pepper flavor.

But….

You guess it.

There was too much sauce!




I mean, look at that wedge on the left. You can’t even see green!

The perk of the salad coming as a wedge was that I was able to scrape the sauce off, and that solved the problem.



Alex ordered the burger and fries:



This burger….

It now lives in infamy at our house. This burger puts all other burgers to shame. This burger made me beg for a third bite, it was so good. This burger made me regret not ordering one of my own.

Normally, Alex drowns his burgers in ketchup, and when his dish was set down and server walked away, he said, “Man, I forgot to ask for ketchup.”

Then he took a bite.

“Alicia, this doesn’t need ketchup!”

Holy moly, my husband wasn’t doctoring his burger. This was a big deal.



Isn’t it wonderful when you try a new restaurant and nothing is disappointing? I mean, sure, the wings were weird, but the taste wasn’t repulsive. All the food was cooked and/or prepared perfectly, the ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were elevated.


Alex and I walked out of Steakhouse 71 wishing we could go back for another lunch. It jumped to Number 1 on our places to eat while at Walt Disney World.


And spoiler alert: the two of us did eat there again.

Twice.



Three visits in, and we still love the place. It has to be the winner for best meal of the trip. I cannot wait to eat there again with mom in April.

Continued From Previous Post:



After lunch, nobody was feeling the desire to go back outside in brutal heat and walk around. Alex wanted to see the Festival of Fantasy parade, but I don’t think any of us had the energy to fight the sunshine.

So, instead, we monorailed back to the TTC and our car, and we decided to stop by our “home” resort.

Since we’d gotten our traditional photos in front of the sword and on the carousel, I decided we should also get our traditional picture of the kids at Shades of Green.



Shades has been the resort my family has stayed at the most over the years. It’s kind of become a beloved part of our Disney trips. Alex and I had both, at points leading up this day, mentioned how weird it was not to be staying at the resort.

That’s our “normal” trip, and we both were missing the familiarity of the lobby and the halls.


So, why not take a break at Shades?



The entrance to the resort is so beautiful:

***Fun Fact: This was almost our wedding venue.***




In the lobby is a Mickey statue decked out in patriotic images, and we’ve gotten pictures of the kids in front of it for years.

That was what they looked like the last time we were at Disney. And now look at them:




It’s baffling how much they grew and changed in 3 years.

Even now, 7 months later, I’m looking at them going, “They look different now.”



Once we grabbed our photos, the four of us took our time, strolling around the resort. We checked out their shop, the same chain as on every military base, but it sold some Disney-specific merchandise. Alex has a soft spot for the place, because it’s where he got his camouflage Goofy hat that he loves. He always goes in hoping to find something just as cool.



Shades also has a ticket office, and out front of it they had set up a cute photo prop in the shape of a teacup for Disney’s 50th Anniversary.







Eventually, my family had gotten our fill of wandering around, and we headed back to our AirBnB.

The kids took a nap while I enjoyed that coconut donut from VooDoo:







When evening time arrived, Alex checked the weather and saw there was a massive storm moving into the area.

And I had zero desire to go out in the pouring rain and breathe in the thick humidity.


Evie didn’t, either.


She asked if she could stay home the rest of the night.


But Landon? He was desperate to get back into the Magic Kingdom. He wanted to ride Space Mountain!

So Alex and I talked for a long time and decided to split up. We asked Evie a hundred times if she would be fine with Landon riding attractions without her. We guaranteed she wouldn’t feel left or get jealous at what her brother got to do.

We also made her very aware that this was her one and only chance to experience Splash Mountain. She wouldn’t be back before it closed forever.



Evie could care less.


“Go, have fun, leave me be.”



All right then.


The result?

All four of us had a lovely evening!



Evie and I sat out on the porch while the storm rolled through, nibbling on apples and oatmeal squares for dinner.



I read my book, Evie watched a movie on her ipad, and it was quiet and peaceful and the exact opposite of our crazy morning.

I put Evie to bed early that evening, worked on laundry, tidied up the house, and decompressed. I didn’t really grasp how much I needed that silence and calm until I was experiencing it.

Neither of us regret not going into the parks.



And the boys?

They had a terrific time.

Let me see if I can remember what they did while running through puddles and getting soaked in the rain.

Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Thunder Mountain.


Even better? They managed to get onto Thunder right as the fireworks were happening! So they got to see them as they rode. That’s been on my bucket list to do for years, but I’ve never managed!



According to Alex, Landon was a machine. He powered through all the queues, never letting the rain bother him, and when Alex told him the park was closing in five minutes, and they were in Adventureland, Landon asked to run over to Tomorrowland and get in line for Space.


I know it sounds crazy that Evie and I didn’t spend much time in the Magic Kingdom, but I think we all ended up doing what was best for each individual. I needed some quiet, Evie needed to be off her feet, Alex needed some coaster riding, and Landon needed a late night “having fun.”



Years ago, when Alex and I took our first trip to Disney together, we were attending nighttime EMH in the Mk and were in line for Big Thunder Mountain. As we were waiting, we heard a dad and his two kids behind us. They were talking about Mom being back in the room with a baby, and the dad was asking the kids if they wanted an ice cream and how many more turns on Thunder they wanted to do.


And Alex and I laughed and wondered if that would be us someday.



Both of us remembered that memory after the boys returned to the AirBnB.

It was perfect.



But it was time to get to bed! We had a very, very busy day planned the following day.

Yes, there will be something new in each park. We haven't seen Pandora yet and with Tron, opening only 3 days before we get to Disney, that gives us the something new in MK. I won't ride much of the new stuff though. Jeff will. I get sick with watching the screens so no Flight of Passage for me. I have a hard time just on Soarn. I am also mot a roller coaster person. I can do small ones but Everest, with going backwards and in the dark is too much for me. The dark also makes me feel sick. So I will stick with Remi, Frozen, Navi, MMRR, Slinky Dog and Aliens. I am on the fence with Rise. I really want to do it but the few screens and the drop worry me. I am going to take Bonine this year and see if that helps.

So plans changed already. The band director has now said we can only check the kids out on the water park day only after they are back at the resort, so at like 6pm. This doesn't work into the plans at all. So we are going to cancel Beaches and Cream. Both kids are fine with this. Nick would rather stay with his friends. He would never tell me this though because he knew I wanted a dinner with them. And Elizabeth could care less about any of this. She seems a bit more like Evie. She does Disney because we take her. She will have fun, but if I don't add enough pool time and resting she is not a happy camper. Her and Jeff are more a like in this fashion. Jeff loves the parks but needs to have his breaks. If we ever split up like you guys did, it would Nick and I in the parks and Jeff and Elizabeth at the resort. That sounds so fun to do. Nick and I would run all over the park racing from one ride to the other while the other 2 just hung out at the pool. It sounds like you guys had a perfect night.

It is hard as they get older and don't spend time with you as much but once you get used to it it is nice. Jeff and I have been able to just go out on dates now and not have to worry about anything. One night about a month or so ago Jeff and I wanted to out for dinner and the kids didn't. So we got them pizza and we went out. Soon we will be moving to the next phase. Nick graduates next year and he will be off to college. That seems so scary to me and also how did this time get her so quickly. This trip will be a good transition to do trips on our own soon.

According to Alex, Landon was a machine. He powered through all the queues, never letting the rain bother him, and when Alex told him the park was closing in five minutes, and they were in Adventureland, Landon asked to run over to Tomorrowland and get in line for Space.

This would be me too, except not Space. It would want another ride on BTMRR.

I'm sure Alex is happy to have someone who will do the parks with him no matter what.

I've been following some post about HEA dessert party. It has not been announced yet so there are no reservations yet. I'm hoping this opens ups soon.

My DH and I had a date night to steakhouse 71 last month! I still dream about those au gratin potatoes. It is definitely on the list of places to return!

I totally get it with those "down" nights! My husband and I have sometimes put our daughter to bed and just will sit and read or watch tv in the hotel room. I went in August with a friend and she and I spent a Friday night in Disney doing nothing but laundry. It was so great lol. We have definitely changed our touring style as we have gotten older.
