So after my husband and I both participated in the 2012 WDW Marathon weekend, we were discussing how to get our kids off the couch and what fun it would be to take a long overdue family trip to WDW. So, we came up with the idea of bribing, uhmmm challenging, our kids to run the WDW Half Marathon in 2013 to earn, uhmmm enjoy, a Disney vacation. Well, all three of them took the bait, uhmmm accepted the challenge! We've completed the C25K program with them and officially registered them on Monday (before the price increase). Now we've switched to a sort of maintenance plan of running/walking 3 miles, 3 days a week. We're going to keep this up the rest of the summer before starting Higdon's plan in September. There has been some minor grumbling and complaining. But what can you expect from three teenagers? They say they still want to do it and after every run I tell them, "That's one run closer to Disney!" I am so proud of them all! The toughest part may be for me and my husband to mesh our training for the Goofy with the kids' training.

Anyone else running any of the races as a family?

Great job by all of you! I wish I could get my husband off the couch to run with me, but he hasn't taken the bait yet (I mean, accepted the challenge). :P

No kids for us yet. Just my husband and I. But, we did say that once our youngest get a bit older that we would love to do the Disney Marathon weekend as a family affair. Congratulations and sounds like a great way to spend family time!

Great job on getting them active. I did the same with my DD8 and DD10 by signing them up for the kids' 1-miler during 2013 marathon weekend where I ran the half. They loved it and we are now training to run the ToT weekend Haunted Trail 5k in September together. :thumbsup2

How cool for you to get your family healthier. My younger 2 would love to come along to Disney with me to run, but this trip is for Mommy and Daddy.;)

That is so awesome! Make sure you bring a camera and get lots of pictures on the course! :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the encouragement! It will keep me going when the going gets tough.

Some runs can be lots of fun - people and nature watching for example. But some runs are torture - teenage angst or something.

Last year was our year - very fun. And I have a feeling we may not be able to do this again as a family. So, I'm looking forward to more couples races!

I definitely want to take pictures. I just have to make sure we have a time cushion built into our pace. And I may have to come up with a new bribe to get them to smile and pose with the characters. Any ideas?

Good for you and your family!

I am running the 1/2 this January (only the 2nd 1/2 in my life), and my 16 y.o. DD had hoped to run it with me. Her cross-country and track coach said "no way", though, so she is just going to run the 5k with a friend. It will still be lots of fun! I told her once she is out of high school, we will run the 1/2 together. That means I need to stay in shape for a couple more years! I guess it will be good motivation!:)
